Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United Edmund B. Apple- States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Pension increased. Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Edmund B. Appleton, late of Company H, Fourteenth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, and pay him a pension at the rate of twenty dollars per month in lieu of that he is now receiving. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of George W. White, late of Company D, Fourth Regiment Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, and pay him a pension at the rate of twelve dollars per month in lieu of that he is now receiving. Approved, June 27, 1902.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Ella B. S. Mannix, widow of Daniel Pratt Mannix, late captain, United States Marine Corps, and pay her a pension at the rate of thirty dollars per month in lieu of that she is now receiving. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of James M. Conrad, late of Company G, One hundred and eighty-seventh Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and pay him a pension at the rate of thirty dollars per month in lieu of that he is now receiving.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the

laws, the name of Stephen B. Todd, late captain Company D, Eighth Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry, and pay him a pension at the rate of forty dollars per month in lieu of that he is now receiving. Approved, June 27, 1902.

CHAP. 1292.-An Act Granting a pension to Fannie Reardon.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Fannie Reardon, widow of Patrick Reardon, alias Patrick Dunn, late of Company B, Second Regiment New York Provisional Volunteer Cavalry, and pay her a pension at the rate of eight dollars per month.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Mary C. Bickerstaff, widow of William J. Bickerstaff, late of Company E, Twelfth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, and pay her a pension at the rate of eight dollars per month.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll, subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Margaret S. Tod, widow of Samuel B. Tod, late sergeant, Company E, Sixteenth Regiment United States Infantry, war with Mexico, and pay her a pension at the rate of sixteen dollars per month in lieu of that she is now receiving.

Edwards, late landsman, United States ship Lancaster, United States Navy, war with Spain.

Towner, late captain Company B, Twelfth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and pay her a pension at the rate of twenty dollars per month. Approved, June 27, 1902.

CHAP. 1317.-An Act To correct the record of John O'Brien.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to remove the charge of desertion now standing on the records against John O'Brien, late private, Company K, Sixth Regiment United States Infantry, and substitute therefor the words "remained absent from his company without proper authority from March third, eighteen hundred and sixty-three, to July fourteenth, eighteen hundred and sixty-three, when he voluntarily returned and was duly enlisted, mustered, and assigned to Company I, in said regiment, and served faithfully and was honorably discharged": Provided, That no pay, bounty, or other emoluments shall become due or payable by virtue of the passage of this Act.

CHAP. 1318.- An Act For the relief of S. J. Bayard Schindel.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United S. J. Bayard Schin- States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War Credit

the accounts of Lieutenant S. J. Bayard Schindel, commissary Sixth Regiment United States Infantry, with the sum of seventy-seven dollars and thirteen cents, being for subsistence funds stolen from the commissary storehouse by unknown parties, and for which he was responsible.

CHAP. 1319.-An Act To correct the military record of Reinhard Schneider. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War is hereby authorized and directed to correct the military record of Rhinehart Schneider, late a private in the Seventy-ninth Regiment of New York Infantry Volunteers, and issue to him an honorable discharge from said regiment in the name of Reinhard Schneider as of the date of September fifteenth, eighteen hundred and sixty-one: Provided, That no pay, bounty, or allowance shall become due or payable by reason of the passage of this Act. Approved, June 28, 1902.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United [Private, No. 1123.] States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby, authorized to amend the military record of James M. Olmstead so as to fix September eighth, eighteen hundred and sixty-three, as the actual date of said Olmstead's discharge from the service as second lieutenant Company F, Eleventh Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry, the same being the date to which he was paid and upon which his service terminated.

CHAP. 1340.-An Act Correcting the record of Levi Wells.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United [Private, No. 1124.] States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to remove the charge of desertion on the records of the War Department against Levi Wells, now of Spencerville, Allen County, Ohio, late a private of Company F, Twenty-fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and a detail to the Twelfth Ohio Battery, and without leave from September eighth, eighteen hundred and sixty-three, until January sixteenth, eighteen hundred and sixty-four, when he reenlisted under the name of John Dolve in the United States Navy and served faithfully until December thirty-first, eighteen hundred and sixty-four, when he was honorably discharged: Provided, That no pay, bounty, or other emoluments shall become due or payable by virtue of the passage of this Act. Approved, June 30, 1902.

CHAP. 1342.-An Act To authorize the Secretary of the Navy to appoint George H. Paul a warrant machinist in the Navy.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the warrant machinist in Navy is hereby authorized to appoint George H. Paul to fill an original vacancy in the one hundred warrant machinists in the Navy, authorized by section fourteen of the Act approved March third, eighteen hundred and ninety-nine, entitled "An Act to reorganize and increase the efficiency of the personnel of the Navy and Marine Corps of the United States," notwithstanding he was about seven months beyond the age limit at the time of examination, he having passed the examination, near the top of the list, under a misapprehension as to the age limit, and having served twelve months at the Naval Academy and four years at sea in the Government service as an engineer. Approved, June 30, 1902.

Hatch, widow of John P. Hatch, late colonel Second Regiment United States Cavalry and brigadier-general United States Volunteers, and pay her a pension at the rate of thirty dollars per month in lieu of that she is now receiving. CHAP. 1344.—An Act For the promotion of First Lieutenant Joseph M. Simms, Revenue-Cutter Service.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President of the Service United States be, and he is hereby, authorized to advance Lieutenant Joseph M. Simms, Revenue-Cutter Service, one grade, from first lieutenant to that of captain, on the "Permanent waiting orders" list in the Revenue-Cutter Service, for meritorious acts of public service and wounds received in the United States service, as appears upon the public records of the volunteer service of the Army and Navy and of the Revenue-Cutter Service: Provided, That this Act shall not increase the pay of said Simms above that provided for a first lieutenant on the retired list, to wit, one thousand eight hundred and ninety dollars.
