THE Gentlemen who awarded the prize on Covetousness, remark, that in doing so, they were conscious of a high feeling of gratitude and admiration at the mass of sanctified talent which had been brought before their view. They affirm, that many of the Essays submitted to them were replete with knowledge of the divine word, of the heart, and character of man, and were marked with comprehensive research, deep penetration, and Christian candour; so that they regretted the thought of their being withheld from the public. They declare their conviction, that the subject is by no means exhausted by any one Essay; and that the great CAUSE of RELIGION would be "eminently served" by their publication. It is with the hope that this may be the case, in some humble degree at least, that the following pages are respectfully presented to the Public. Southampton. |
