dust of your feet, as a testimony against them.
And they departed, and went Mark vi. through the towns, preaching 12, 13. the gospel and preached that
men should repent. And they Luke ix. 6. cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
Some time after, the apostles Mark vi. gathered themselves together 30. unto Jesus, and told him all
things, both what they had Luke is. done, and what they had taught. 10. Here the commission ends. And now they continue with him, to be the better acquainted with what Jesus said and did. And the harvest being great, Jesus sends forth other seventy, with the same commission, in their stead.
On Peter's noble confession, Mat. xvi. 13. Jesus said unto him, "Thou 18, 19. Mark viii. art Peter, and on this rock will 27. I build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven : whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, shall be loosed in hea
At Capernaum, Christ said Mat. xviii. unto the twelve (beginning now 18, 19. to open their new commission for life to them), "Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
At Jerusalem, just before the last passover that Jesus kept with his apostles, foretelling what should come to pass after
his death; he says, that "They Luke xxi. should be brought before kings 12-16. and rulers for his name sake; but that they should settle it in their hearts, not to meditate before what they should answer. For," says he, "I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which your adversaries shall not be able to resist."
In the last discourse and John xiv. prayer that Jesus makes among 12-15. his disciples, he says, Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye
shall ask any thing in my name,
I will do it. And I will pray John xiv. the Father, and he shall give 16, 17.

Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall| teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. When the Comforter is John xv. come, he shall testify of me: 27. and then (fearful as you now
are) you also shall bear witness,
because ye have been with me
from the beginning.-Never-John xvi. theless, I tell you the truth: it 7, 8. lis expedient for you that I go
away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteous- ness, and of judgment.-And he John xvi. will guide you into all truth:13-15. for he shall not speak of him- self; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak; and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. Al|| things that the Father hath are mine, therefore, said I, he shall take of mine, and shew it unto
you. And in that day ye shall John xvi. ask me nothing; verily, verily, 23, 24. I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he shall give it you. Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be
full.-And, addressing himself John xvii. to God, he says, As thou hast 18, 19. sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the
world. And for their sakes I
sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified through the
truth.-And the glory which John xvii. thou gavest me, I have given 22. unto them: that they may be
one, even as we are one."
The evening of the day, on Luke xxiv. which he arose from the dead, 46-49. he said unto them; "Thus it
is written; and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, or by his authority,| among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." He being, by his resurrection from the dead, declared to be the Son of God,
and the heir and governor of all things, and being in a few days to have all power put into his hands.
"And ye are witnesses of John xx. these things; as my Father 21-24. hath sent me, so send I you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said, "Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are re- tained."
Jesus met the eleven in a mountain in Galilee (perhaps xvi. 7. the very mountain where he and xxvi. chose them, and where, it may 32. Mark be, he was transfigured), accordxvi. 17, ing to his appointment before
his death, Mat. xxvi. 32, and Mark iv. 28, and just after his resurrection, Mark xvi. 7. And being assembled together with them there, Acts i. 4, (the other times he appeared to them, after his resurrection, seem to have been by sur- prise,) says to them: "Go into Mark xvi. all the world, and preach the 15. 19. gospel to every creature. And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
And Jesus spake to them, Mat. saying, "All power is (now xxviii. declared to be, and will very 18-20.

the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things, what- soever I have commanded: and lo, I am with you to the end of the age." Then he directs them to go up to Jerusalem (whither their present fears would probably have hindered them from going, without bis particular orders), and com- mands them to tarry there till they were endued with power from on high; or till they received the promise of the Father: "which," says he, "ye have heard of me: that John baptized with water, ye shall be baptized with the Luke Holy Ghost not many days xxiv. 41. hence."
The eleven return with Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem, Acts xiii. 31. And when they Acts i. 6. were come together there, they ask him, "If the meaning of his coming back with them thither was to restore the kingdom to Israel?" which they do not ask so much out of so great a degree of impatience for restoring the kingdom; as out of surprise at the thought that he should restore the kingdom to a nation that had used him with such cruelty so lately at this very place. Jesus tells them, it is not for them to know the times and seasons; but
adds, " ye shall receive power,
Acts i. 8. after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and in the Mark xvi. Juttermost parts of the earth." 20. And afterward they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the words with the
