PREFACE.

For many years the writer of the following pages has felt there has been a lack in the literary world, in regard to supplying a book that should unitedly arrest the attention and excite the interest of young persons, when by circumstances deprived of the ordinances of the sanctuary. Biography, narrative, or a chapter or two of the word itself, may serve to occupy the time, and engross the thoughts of one or more members of the family; but, for want of a work of a more general character, interruption may be given by other members of the household, and thus profit and advantage neutralized. Contention, in place of harmony, has often arisen upon these very grounds; and the parent or teacher has, in consequence, become the subject of anxiety, when about to leave their young charge for a season, in order personally to go up to the house of the Lord. How often have such parents or teachers wished for a book that might serve, under God, to arouse and maintain the general interest of all those for the time being left to themselves!

Moreover, as association is so engrafted in our very being, the thoughts, almost as a matter of course, follow the absent members of the family, and imperceptibly there is at least a mental and ideal participation in their engage
