On the 15th of June, Col. Haldane, member for Stirling, &c. waited of the Rt Hon. William Pitt and Henry Bilfon Legge, Efqs, at London, and delivered to each the freedom of the guildry of Stirling in a filver box [259.1, and a letter, of which the following is a copy. SIR,

ed to you, to prefent my fincere acknowledgments to the brethren of the guild of Stirling, for the great honour they have been pleased to confer on me, in admitting me to the freedom of a guild-brother of that borough.

Confcious as I am of my unworthinefs, I must always feel with the trueft gratitude how highly I ftand indebted to their partial favour, in attributing the merit of real fervices to my very infufficient endeavours in execution of his Majefty's moft gracious intentions, for the fafety and happiness of his people. Am ordered by the guildry of this borough to exprefs, in their name, the juft fenfe they entertain of your me. rit, in propofing, during your late ad. miniftration, the wife, virtuous, and frugal measures you was to have follow. ed in the conduct of public affairs, had you continued in the management there of; measures extremely proper in themfelves, but more particularly necessary at prefent, in order to retrieve former Whitehall, June 16. most bumble fervant, errors, whereby, through the faults of minifters, the honour and intereft of his Majefty's crown and kingdoms have been neglected, corruption become almost universal, and the national debt increased to such a bulk, as to afford very gloomy profpects to all true lovers of their country, even in time of profound peace, but much more fo, when enga ged in a dangerous war with a powerful enemy. This corporation, Sir, are perfuaded, that, with the bleffing of almighty God, the methods you fo wifely propofed, if followed out under your direction, would have in a great degree removed thofe evils, prevented the fame for the future, and thereby have reftored thefe kingdoms to their ancient felicity and glory: wherefore they have ordered me to return you their thanks, flowing from hearts full of gratitude for fuch laudable endeavours to fave your country; and as a teftimony of their refpect, they beg you would be pleased to accept of the freedom of their fociety, herewith fent you. By an advertisement, of date June 20. the trustees of the turnpike-roads in the county of Edinburgh gave notice to all houfeholders in South and North Leith, and in the fuburbs of Edinburgh, that 3 A

for this year, a compofition of eighteen pence Sterling, for the fix days ftatute work, three days before and three after harvest, which all householders in the county are obliged by law to work upon

the roads.

it was agreed to take from each of them, of January laft, on their return from the Lewis fishing, off of Zetland, when endeavouring to make a harbour, they met with a violent ftorm, which drove them to the northward. The storm continued all day with great violence; and about midnight they fhipped a great fea, which carried away all their mafts and fails, and washed Capt. Burton and three of his hands overboard. There now remained on board only Mr Rofs, two men, and a boy; who were toffed at the pleasure of the waves, having neither fails nor rigging, for three weeks and five days, and were then drove afhore on an- ifland 60 leagues north of Dronthein in Norway, with fix feet water in the hold. Here they remained three months before the ice broke up: they then got a paffage to Dronthein in a fishing-boat, and came thence to the Orkneys.

The Hudson's-bay fleet, viz. the Old Rupert, Fowler, of 18 guns; the New Rupert, Squirrel, and the Sea horfe, Norwich, of 14 guns each; and the Hudson's-bay, Fowler, of 10, came into Leith road on the 3d of June, and proceeded thence on their voyage upon

the 8th.

Three English Eaft-India fhips came into Leith road June 26. viz. the Suffolk, Capt. Wilfon; the Godolphin, Capt. Hutchefon; and the Houghton, Capt. Walpole. On the 9th of March, before they doubled the cape of Good Hope, they had a fmart engagement with two French men of war; one a two-decker, with fourteen ports in her lower tier; and the other a frigate of 26 guns; whom they obliged to fheer off, having carried away the maintop maft of the largeft fhip. By fhot lodged in their hulls, it was found, that the great fhip carried 24 and 12 pounders, and the fmall one 12 pounders. The Godolphin expended 310 fhot and 13 barrels of powder; one of her midfhipmen loft a leg, and two other men were wounded; but they all recovered. For their bravery the crew of each fhip is to receive 2000l. in purfuance of a refolution of the company, to give a bounty to that extent to every crew which fhould defend their fhip when at tacked by the enemy's fhips of war. Thefe fhips are vifited by vaft numbers of people of both fexes from Edinburgh, and from the country on both fides the frith. They get a deal of money for china ware, tea, filks, &c. and there are many diverting fcenes between the purchafers of the India goods and the cuftomhoufe-officers.

Mr Rofs, late mate of the of Leith, Robert Burton mafter, arrived at Leith, June 12. from the Orkneys, and gives the following account of the lofs of that fhip. About the beginning

In a letter from Glafgow, of June 19. we have the following account. 66 On Monday laft, the Rev. Mr Whitefield, at the defire of feveral of our magiftrates, preached a charity-fermon for the benefit of the poor of this city, from Mark vi. 34. &c. At the conclufion of his difcourfe he preffed the charity with many folid arguments. It was collected with decency and folemnity. A number of the magiftrates and elders stood up to collect at the outfide of the congregation; who went away with regularity, and gave their contributions very chearfully. The whole amounted to 581. Sterling, which is all to be applied to the relief of our poor. After fermon the magiftrates waited on Mr Whitefield, and thanked him for this good office, which has given great and general fatisfaction."

A difcourfe, in honour of the memory of Dr Clerk, lately deceafed [278.], was pronounced in the hall of the royal infirmary, Edinburgh, on the 24th of June, by Dr Cullen, before a numerous audience, compofed of perfons of the firft diftinction. The whole company expreffed great fatisfaction, as well with the difcourfe, as with the justice done to the character of the great phyfician who was the fubject of it.

B The Aquilon, a French war-thip, of 48 By Corke for Newfoundland, retaken, fent in

guns, but pierced for 56, and 450 men, drove upon the rocks on the north part of Hodierne bay, and irrecoverably loft, May 13. In the engagement the Aquilon had 30 men killed and 25 wounded, among the latter the captain; and the Antelope had 3 killed and 13 wounded, was much thattered in her rigging and fails, and had her mizenmaft fhot through. The Antelope, May 24. took a fmall fnow from Bourdeaux for Canada, with wine, brandy, and flour; and, on the 25th, a privateer of 6 guns, 10 fwivels, and 50 men, that had come out of Port Louis the evening before. [Robert Murray, late a schoolboy in Edinburgh, a midshipman on board the Antelope, of about 17 years of age, had both his legs fhot off by a cannon-ball, which foon occafioned his death. After he was carried down to be dreffed, he heard the fhip's crew huzza; on which he flourished his dying hand over his head, and, with his last breath, uttered an huzza, imagining that the Aquilon had ftruck: An instance of heroism worthy to be recorded in the annals of fame.]

By the Eagle, [Capt. Pallifer], and the Medway: The Duke d'Aquitaine, Sieur d'Efquelen, a French Eaft-India fhip, of about 1500 tuns, 50 eighteen-pounders, and 493 men, taken, May 30. 48 deg. N. and 2 deg. W. longitude from the Lizard, after an engagement of about three quarters of an hour; in which the Duke d'Aquitaine had about 50 killed, and a great many wounded, of whom 22 very dangerously; all her mafts, fails, and rigging, broke away, and fell overboard before night; and the Eagle had to killed and 32 wounded; but the Medway, as her fire could only be employed in raking the French fhip, had only to men wounded. The Duke d'Aquitaine came from Lisbon; where the landed, fome months ago, a very rich cargo from the East Indies. When taken, she was only e. quipped for war, with orders to cruise for fifteen days, ten or twelve leagues off the rock of Lifbon, in order to intercept the Mermaid, a Britifh 20 gun fhip, which was on the point of failing from Lisbon with a convoy. During her cruife, fhe took an English brig from Cadiz for Corke, which was ranfomed for 2001.

By the Lancaster, Capt. Edgecumbe, and Dunkirk, Capt. Howe: Le Comte de Gramont, a privateer [of Bayonne], of 36 guns and 370 men; Le Nouveau Saxon, a privateer [of Bourdeaux], of 16 guns and 150 men; and a schooner from Bourdeaux for Quebeck, with wine and brandy; all carried into Plymouth, June 18.

The Admiralty have published a lift, dated June 15. of French war-fhips and privateers taken by his Majefty's fhips fince the 6th of April, in number 22; mounting 334 carriage-guns and 58 fwivels, and having on board 3036 men. If to this be added the number taken by privateers, the lofs of the French in that time must be very confiderable. On the other hand, the French are faid to have taken from April 1. to June 17. 193 British fhips, viz. 56 in April, 80 in May, and 57 in June.
