Surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him judicially stricken; smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement, by which our peace is effected, was laid upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

I

I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people : and, behold, I having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him: no, nor yet Herod; for I sent you to him; and lo, nothing worthy of death is done by him. I will therefore chastise him, and release him. Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged him.

FORASMUCH THEN AS CHRIST HATH SUFFERED FOR US IN THE FLESH, ARM YOURSELVES LIKEWISE WITH THE SAME MIND: FOR HE THAT HATH SUFFERED IN THE FLESH HATH CEASED FROM SIN.

RECOMPENSE TO NO MAN EVIL FOR EVIL.

AVENGE NOT YOURSELVES, BUT RATHER GIVE PLACE UNTO WRATH : FOR IT IS WRITTEN, VENGEANCE IS MINE; I WILL REPAY, SAITH THE LORD.

BE NOT OVERCOME OF EVIL, BUT OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD.

I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a fiint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. He is near

that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head.

They gaped upon me with their mouths.

I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.

The soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

BLESSED ARE YE WHEN MEN SHALL REVILE YOU AND PERSECUTE YOU, AND SHALL SAY ALL MANNER OF EVIL AGAINST YOU, FALSELY, FOR MY SAKE.

IF THE WORLD HATE YOU, YE KNOW THAT IT HATED ME BEFORE IT HATED YOU. IF YE WERE OF THE WORLD, THE WORLD WOULD LOVE HIS OWN BUT BECAUSE YE ARE NOT OF THE WORLD, BUT I HAVE CHOSEN YOU OUT OF THE WORLD, THEREFORE THE WORLD HATETH YOU. REMEMBER THE WORD THAT I SAID UNTO YOU, THE SERVANT IS NOT GREATER THAN HIS LORD. IF THEY HAVE PERSECUTED ME, THEY WILL ALSO PERSECUTE YOU; IF THEY HAVE KEPT MY SAYING, THEY WILL KEEP YOURS ALSO.
