It will perhaps be objected to the present work, undertaken as it is, for the express purpose of exhibiting and of establishing on a Scriptural basis, a view of the original sin, differing materially from the popular and received opinion respecting it, that such an undertaking is uncalled for; inasmuch as the great mass of Christians, especially in modern ages, have been satisfied to receive the account transmitted to us of it, in a plain and literal sense; and in so doing, have been enabled to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit, in all righteousness, faith, hope, and charity, and to have attained to as high a
