The Hon. Frederick Eden (son of Lord Auckland) is appointed one of the tellers of Exchequer, vice Lord Thurlow deceast.

Col. Robert Anstruther is appointed conjunct Clerk of the Bills in Scotland, in room of his father Sir Robert Anstruther of Balcaskie, Bart. who has resigned.

The counties of Caithness and Sutherland are now divided into separate sheriffdoms, and James Trail Esq; is continued Sheriffdepute of Caithness, and George Cranston Esq. advocate is appointed Sheriff depute of Sutherland.

The King has presented the Rev. Robert Lunan to the church of Kinnettles, vice the Rev. David Ferny, deceast. The Rev. Thomas Brown to the church of Tongland, vice Mr Robb, deceast. The Rev. June 24 The Senatus Academicus of the University of Edinburgh conferred the degree of Doctor in Medicine on the following Gentlemen, after the usual examina tions:

Aug. 1. On board his Majesty's ship Saturn, off Cadiz, Lieut, James Flint, son of the late Lieut. Col. Flint.

8. At the Hotwells, Bristol, Patrick O'Brien, the Irish giant. This extraordinary man, whose height exceeded eight feet, was born at Kinsale, in Ireland, and had long been the wonder of the age. He was interred at the Catholic chapel in Trenchard-street, Bristol. The stupendous coffin, for this remarkable personage, was in length nine feet five inches; and five men got into it with ease, and had the lid placed upon it. The brass-plate contained the following inscription: "Patrick Cotter O'Brien, of Kinsale, Ireland, whose stature was eight feet one inch. Died September 8, 1806, aged 46 years." There were emblems on it, denoting the deceased to have belonged to the Masonic Order of Knights Templar.

9. George Crawford, Esq. only surviving child of the late Captain David Crawford of Carronbank. He was unfortunately lost in a pleasure boat off Inchcolm in the Frith of Forth, during the violent thunder storm in the afternoon of that day.

Sept. 11. At his house of Greenlaw, aged 84, Charles Ross, Esq.

12. At his seat at Dulwich, in his 71st year, the Right Hon. Edward Thurlow, Lord Thurlow of Ashfield in Suffolk, one of the Tellers of Exchequer, a Privy Counsellor, and formerly Lord Chancellor of England. His Lordship's illness was very short. The day before he died, he was in his ordinary health, but towards the evening complained of an uncommon chillness; and, by advice of his friends, took a warm drink on retiring to rest. In the morning his servant found him dead and cold. His Lordship never was married; the title (being to his own issue male) is thus extinct. He is succeeded in his estate by his nephew Edward Thurlow, Esq. son of the late Lord Bishop of Durham. His Lordship was an able lawyer, and a bold and forcible pleader. His reputation as a Judge stood likewise very high; and tho' his manner was often rough, yet his talents commanded the respect of his country.

13. At Chiswick-house in Middlesex, the seat of his Grace the Duke of Devonshire, the Right Hon. CHARLES JAMES FOX, his Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Mr Fox's complaint was the drop sy, which baffled the skill of the most eminent physicians. The first operation of tapping, on the 7th of August, afforded some temporary relief; and at the pressing

solicitation of the Duke of Devonshire, Mr Fox consented to remove from his house in Palace-yard to the Duke's seat at Chiswick, to try the effect of a change of air. The alarming symptoms, however, again recurred, and a repetition of the operation became necessary, which was accordingly performed by Mr Cline with much skill on the 31st of August, when about seven quarts of water were drawn off, and next day nearly the same quantity. Mr Fox again obtained some relief by these operations; but in a few days, a languor and general debility of the intestines ensued. He became gradually more weak and languid, till Saturday the 13th, at six o'clock in the evening, when he expired without a struggle.
