Page 48 - In general, the success of these mechanical stokers lies not in the fact that they consume smoke but that they burn the coal without producing much smoke at all. Tar vapors and other heavy carbon-hydrogen compounds which are the product of distillation of coal under certain treatment burn slowly, and in order to burn them nearly completely they must be kept a comparatively long time within the furnace.
