"Hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth, and with labour do we find the things that are before us; but the things that are in Heaven, who hath searched out? And Thy counsel who hath known except Thou give wisdom and send Thy HOLY SPIRIT from above?"-Wisdom ix. 16, 17.

DONIMINA

PREFACE.

THE Writer of this little Commentary very thankfully believes that there are not a few to whom it will seem meagre and unsatisfying but he believes also that there are many for whom some such work is much needed. He therefore publishes it with the prayer often already offered that the All-merciful would be pleased to accept it and bless it to His children.

He thinks it only right to add that for the notes he is very largely indebted to others: chiefly among ancient writers to S. Augustine, S. Chrysostom, and S. Jerome: to the Rev. I. Williams, and to the author of the "Plain Commentary" among moderns.
