Englund's masterpiece is probably the finest biography on any subject I have ever read. His command of the English language is astonishing; his breadth of research magnificent.
Above all, Stephen
Englund consistently gets to the essence of how, why and what Napoleon did (or didn't do), and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions as to the merit. He has no bias pro or con Napoleon; he is a historian in the truest and best sense of the word.
Anyone who is a student of history or politics will be the richer for having read "Napoleon - A Political Life." Douglas J. Allan, Chairman and President Emeritus, the Napoleonic Historical Society.
