He edited Richelet's Dictionnaire, and Moron's Dietionnaire historique. He left moreover in manuscript his Mimoires historiques et litteraires, which were published immediately after his death. GOULD, Augustus Addison, M.D., an American naturalist and physician, born in New Ipswich, N. H, April 23, 1805. His father's family name was Duren, which was changed to that of Gould. He was graduated at Harvard college in 1825, took his medical degree in 1830, and at once commenced practice in Boston, where he has since resided. During his college life he devoted his spare moments to the study of natural history; in the early part of his professional career he lectured frequently on scientific subjects, and for 2 years gave instruction in botany and zoology at Harvard college. In 1855 he delivered the annual discourse before the Massachusetts medical society, the title of his address being " Search out the Secrets of Nature;" and in 1856 he received the appointment of a visiting physician to the Massachusetts general hospital. He is a member of the principal American, and of several foreign learned societies. He is an accomplished naturalist, and in the department of conchology stands preeminent both at home and abroad. His principal published works are: a translation ofDe Lamarck's "Genera of Shells" (12mo., Boston, 1833); "System of Natural History" (8vo., 1833); translation of Gall's works; the "Invertebrate Animals of Massachusetts" (8vo., Cambridge, 1841), published by legislative authority;...
