JOSHUA.

Fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and truth; and if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you, this day, whom you will serve; but, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

SAMUEL AND JOB.

The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.

God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers.

If iniquity be in thy hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot: yea, thou shalt be

steadfast, and shalt not fear, because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away. And thy age shall be clearer than the noon-day: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning

and thou shalt be secure, because there is hope.3 Also, thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid. But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

PSALMS.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 Hope in God, firm trust in his providence.

Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle?—who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned, but he honoureth them that fear the Lord.

All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thy heart.

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; but he that trusteth in the Lord mercy shall compass him about.

What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile; depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

but the Lord delivereth him out of them

all.

Fret not thyself because of evil doers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

Trust in the Lord and do good; delight thyself also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him; fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way; cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

I have been young and now am old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay-tree,

yet he passed away, and lo! he was not; yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace; but the transgressors shall be destroyed together; the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit ; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness; he is gracious and full of compassion, and righteous.

A good man showeth favour and lendeth ; he will guide his affairs with discretion. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.

It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are
