(Happy indeed was he who could say)— "I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

EPISTLE TO TITUS (A Young Minister.)

Speak the things which become sound doctrine that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate; sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise : that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at

home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Young men likewise exhort to be soberminded. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil to say of you.

Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again, not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the word of God our Saviour in all things.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us, that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world, looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour,

Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. But avoid foolish questions and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law, for they are unprofitable and vain.

THE EPISTLE TO THE HEBREWS.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

Let brotherly love continue.

Remember them that are in bond as bound with them; and them who suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as you have; for God will never leave you,

nor forsake you; so that we may boldly say, The Lord is my keeper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

16

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines; for it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace,' and not with meats;16 which have not profited them who have been occupied therein.

THE EPISTLE OF JAMES.

A double-minded man is unstable in all

his ways.

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Let no man say, when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be

16 With the truths of the Gospel, and not with vain ceremonies-we may so understand these words.

tempted of evil, neither tempteth he any man; but every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own evil desires, and enticed.

Do not err; every good gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

But whosoever looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he, being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

If any man seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
