PHONOLOGY OF THE FOLK-SPEECH. Glossic Symbols.-These will be very easily understood by giving a little attention to the following key to the sounds which they represent, the symbols being invariable, viz. :— a short as in gnat. a' fine Southern English a as in ask, between a and aa. aa as in baa. ae as in Provincial English net; Fr. ê; Germ. ä. ai as in bait. ao open Italian o, between o and oa. au as in caul. e as in Southern English net. ee as in beet. ei as in bite. eo close Fr. eu in peu; feu. eu as in Europe. h' not quite u', which see. i as in knit. i' as in y final in beauty'; happy; &c. o as in not. oa as in coal. oe as in open Fr. eu in veuf; Germ. ö. oo as in cool. u as in nut. u' obscure sound as in fatal; abide; luncheon; &c. See h'. ù between u and oo. ue Fr. u; Germ. ü, uo same as bush; full; &c. dh as th in this. th as in thin. zh as in azure; division; measure. [] denotes accent, as [bi'sei'd]: = beside. The foregoing is all that is necessary for the general reader to be acquainted with in order to make himself master of the simple-or compromise Glossic, which indicates with close accuracy the pronunciation of the chief words throughout the Glossary. The more minute analysis which in some cases is added, as for ei = i [a'y; aay'; ah'; &c.], is intended for those critical students of phonology to whom MR. A. J. ELLIS's Universal Glossic will not be as 'the accents of an unknown tongue.'
