Excerpt from A Narrative of the Services of the Officers and Enlisted Men of the 7th Regiment of Vermont Volunteers (Veterans), From 1862 to 1866

It was, unfortunately, the fate of the regiment, during its entire service, to Operate in fields far distant from Vermont, and, except for a brief period, shortly after its departure from the State, to be isolated from all other Vermont regi ments, and for the most part from all other Eastern tr00ps. Its history, therefore, is separate and distinct. Most, if not all, of the other Vermont regiments, at one time or another, were brigaded or attached to the same armies, and have, to a large extent, a common history. The duties performed by the Seventh from the early part of 1863 to the fall of 1864 were of such a nature that the more prominent features of its career are made up entirely of the individual achievements of its officers or detached portions of the regiment. After the return of the Seventh to New Orleans in the Autumn of 1864, it served continuously as a regiment until it was dis banded ia April, 1866.
