"I am very fond of your books, as I find that under a good teacher they highly interest the children and make them good readers. The percentage in reading in the boys' school last year was one hundred, and this year ninety-nine. This fact alone speaks volumes for your reading books."-Extract from a Letter from Mr. G. Coppin, Head Master, St. Michael and All Angels, Woolwich.

It is not every story-book that will bear reading over a sufficient number of times for children to master its vocabulary, or that contains as much information as we may reasonably hope to convey while teaching reading, or such a variety of passages as to give sufficient exercise in the art of reading. The reprints before us are specially chosen as possessing these merits, and they appear to us to be well adapted to their purpose. Copies of these books should be in every school library; they will be read eagerly and with profit."-Schoolmaster.

"That reading books for young people should be at once readable and of good literary quality is a principle too obvious to be disputed, though it is not unfrequently disregarded by the compilers of such works. In these above named [Gulliver's Travels, Vicar of Wakefield, Lamb's Tales], it is distinctly recognized. Standard works of sterling value and great interest to the young are presented to them in a form adapted to their use by the simple omission of extraneous and unsuitable matter, without any further change. Great care and judgment have been exercised in making the incisions, so that no trace of them is discernible by the reader, who can therefore feel no sense of incompleteness The Tales fre entire, those only having been

NOTE. The following version is reprinted from the copy of Shakspere used by the late Charies Kemble in his public readings.
