Entroduction.

THE memory of Richard the Third has been so blackened by the aspersions that hired and prejudiced authors have united to cast upon it, and the era in which he lived is so far removed from inquiry, that an attempt to place his character in a favourable point of view may appear, at first sight, to be a task of exceeding difficulty, even if it be at all practicable or possible. Nevertheless, a very slight examination of the evidence on which he has been condemned will present him to the reader in a new light, and he will, at one step, be raised from the degraded level in which many are disposed to place him, and will take his stand among the foremost men of his proud and kingly race.
