SPECIAL NOTICE.-All remittances must be made by BANK DRAFT, MONEY ORDER, OR EXPRESS ORDER. Members initiated after January 1st, are not liable for this assessment. Treasurers are required to forward 82.00 Grand Dues for each new member initiated since last returns were made. It will be noted in the right hand column that the above claims are all paid and the date of payment given. From the Grand President. The Ladies Society has been organized for the purpose of rendering assistance and encouragement to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in their good work of extending the hand of charity and helping each other in time of need, as well as to elevate our social and intellectual standing. It is the aim of the Society to cultivate a spirit of harmony, to promote sociability, and to draw into friendly and affectionate relationship the lady members of the families of the Brotherhood. Hence, we have adopted for our motto "Friendship and Charity." Many letters are received by me, asking why the brothers do not urge their wives and other members of their families to join the Society, as it is in their interest that we labor. No better, cheaper or safer insurance can be found It is true that the maximum amount of insurance which can be carried by a member is not so very large, but if the membership will increase sufficiently there is no doubt but that within a very short time the Society can also increase the amount of insurance, with but little additional expense to the members. than ours. The Insurance Department of the Ladies' Society is not organized for the purpose of money-making. The assessments are levied in amounts necessary to meet the actual expenses of the department, which of course includes the payment of claims, etc. The good work which has been accomplished through this medium needs no special reference at this time; neither is it necessary to invite attention to the many dark clouds which it has helped to lift from the homes of the members of the Brotherhood often after a long and tedious illness. when the loved one was called away, very There should be a lodge of the Ladies Brotherhood. I can say, without fear of Society connected with every lodge of the successful contradiction, that wherever a lodge has been organized it has been help ful to the brothers, not only in pleasure misfortune enter the door, the sisters can but also in sorrow. Should sickness or enter, not as strangers, but as good and sincere friends, and offer that aid and sympathy which is so often needed at such times. Many of our lodges have instituted a weekly sick benefit, and by means of social gatherings have kept the actual cost of maintaining the same at a very small cost to the membership. Ample protection is afforded the lodge by means of the medical examination, which is also a protection to the Insurance Department of the Society. During the past year many of our members have been expelled for nonpayment of dues. The laws governing the payment of dues are very plain and explicit. They specifically state when and how dues are due and payable. When expulsion results from carelessness, then no one is to blame but the person who fails to do her duty. In permitting this she not only fails to do her duty as a member but also does a great injustice to herself and to her family. The Society will promptly meet all just obligations; but to do this it is absolutely necessary that the members promptly pay their dues and have the assessments forwarded to the Grand Secretary and Treasurer as the law requires. (160) When balloting upon the application of a new member, personal feeling should not be permitted to enter. The point to be determined is, will the applicant make a good and loyal member of the Society. Let your sense of honor and your conscience decide rather than your personal like or dislike. To refuse admission to an applicant without good and sufficient cause is a very serious matter. Friend ship and charity, especially the latter, are, or should be, broad enough to govern each and every member in her actions toward others. I wish to extend to the sisters and brothers my best wishes for a happy holiday season, and with the opening of another new year let us hope that a united effort will be made to make the year 1904 a record breaker in the way of membership and influence, for both the Brotherhood and Society. G. M. SARGENT, Grand President. The Missouri State Meeting. The first state meeting of the Ladies Societies of Missouri convened September 29, in Nevada. Upon their arrival the guests were welcomed by the members of the reception committee, who escorted them to pleasant homes where they were charmingly entertained during their stay. The meeting was called to order at 9:30, on the morning of the 29th, and Sister Bettie Freeman, by a pleasing address of welcome, succeeded in making everyone feel very much at home. A letter of regret from our Grand President, Sister Sargent, was read. We would have been more than pleased had she been able to be present. However, we, in common with every member of our Order, know that her heart is ever with us, that our joys and sorrows are always hers. After roll call Sister Freeman of Nevada was elected chairman of the meeting. Sister Berta Hammond was made Secretary. Secret sessions followed. In the evening Brother Thompson, after much deliberation, was persuaded to escort fourteen of the ladies to a ball given at the Insane Asylum, a beautiful place, perfectly managed. Brother Thompson is certainly a fine chaperon. He actually brought us all away with him, although he lined us up and counted, to be sure of it. children, who had prepared an excellent program. Later, a delicious banquet was served and our first busy day came to a joyous close. Wednesday, the 30th, was given over to business until 4:30 p. m., when we were invited to hold a joint meeting with the B. of L. F. This proved to be more of an "experience meeting," and our State meeting would have been incomplete had it been omitted. For the last evening, Nevada Lodge had planned a most enjoyable time in the way of a ball given in the Eagle Club rooms. There we tripped the "light fantastic" until train time, when we reluctantly said "good-by" to our Nevada friends and the visiting sisters from Pittsburg and Ft. Scott. We can not say too much in praise of our Nevada brothers and sisters. They are certainly fine entertainers, and when the State meeting is again held under the auspices of White Carnation Lodge and the roll is called, we will surely all be there. MRS. BERTA HAMMOND, State Secretary, Monett, Mo. A Grateful Acknowledgment. Through the columns of the Magazine, the sisters of World's Fair Lodge 163 express heartfelt thanks to the many kind sisters who so nobly aided the members of their Society who were in the June flood. They are very grateful to worthy Grand President, Sister Sargent, and Grand Secretary and Treasurer, Sister DuBois, for the prompt attention that was so cheerfully given to their plea for help. Three hundred fifty-two dollars and thirty-five cents was received, a much larger amount than was expected, but it was given to a worthy cause, and the members of World's Fair Lodge stand ever ready to assist any lodge or sister that may need help. Should any sister come to their city they would be glad to have her visit them. As President of World's Fair Lodge 163, the writer can not find words to express her admiration for our Order, which has so admirably exemplified its broad principle of "Charity." World's Fair Lodge is very prosperous. It was organized June 20, 1902, with sixteen charter members. It now has a membership of forty-two with every prospect of fifty by the first of the year. Every sister in 163 wishes one and all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. NELLIE CHUTE, Pres. 163, East St. Louis, Ill. |
