PREFACE TO NEW EDITION. IN this new edition of "Beginning Life," I have re-written entirely the part dealing with the genuineness of the Gospels in the light of the most recent criticism on the subject, and especially the confident statements as to the later origin of all the four Gospels made by the author of "Supernatural Religion." With no pretensions to deal in such a volume with the details of this author's argument, I think I have pointed out sufficiently how little the course of his argument affects the originality of the substantial evidence for the supernatural origin of Christianity. Here, as throughout, I have sought to state the case with perfect candour and impartiality-in short, to take the reader into my confidence, and (as I hope) to give him some real assistance in coming to a right conclusion.
