entrusted ; well assured that whatsoever would not be accounted acceptable in the Lord's sight must in reality be a robbery of Him to whom all the increase belongs.
We might have rendered this Magazine one of more general resort, by stowing in it fewer weapons of war, and a greater variety of high-seasoned provisions ; but the complexion of the times will not allow us conscientiously to do so. The word controversy is made a great bugbear of, and the exclusion of all that appertains to it would be regarded by many as a positive recommendation, but God forbid we should ever yield to the demand, wbich, in such days as these is tantamount to that of the rebellious spirits who exclaimed, “Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.” “Speak unto us smooth things, prophecy deceits.” No, if ever there could be a time when such triling with precious opportunities was justifiable, we, at least, do not live in such times; and seeing that the last fiery conflict of the church draws on apace, we will not, because we dare not, cease from reminding Christian Mothers that the very pursery must be a training-ground for young soldiers of Christ ; that they must be taught, among their first perceptions, to distinguish the uniform, the arms, the banners of their Lord's enemies from those of His faithful followers ; and that, living in the midst of a hostile encampment, it is need
ful to shew them the various snares spread for their feet.
To this intent, we have reminded, and still purpose to remind our Christian sisters of what, in the sacred tranquillity of their homes they might be likely and perhaps not unwilling, to forget. We do not wish to transform our Magazine into a Fancy Fair, nor to substitute trinkets for “ the sword of the Spirit, the shield of faith," and the rest of that“ whole armour of God” they are commanded to “put on,” that tbey may be able to “ withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” To stand as conquerors in the presence of Him, who has a crown of righteousness laid up for such as “ fight the good fight.”
