99.

How lovely are Thy dwellings fair!
O Lord of Hosts, how dear
The pleasant tabernacles are,
Where Thou dost dwell so near!
My soul doth long and almost die,
Thy courts, O Lord, to see;
My heart and flesh aloud do cry,
O Living God, for Thee.

There even the sparrow, freed from wrong,
Hath found a house of rest;
The swallow, there to lay her young,

Hath built her brooding nest;
Ev'n by Thy altars, Lord of Hosts,
They find their safe abode :

And home they fly from round the coasts,
T'ward Thee, my King, my God.

No shadows yonder !

All light and song!

Each day I wonder,

And say,

"How long

Shall time me sunder

From that dear throng?"

No weeping yonder !

All fled away!

While here I wander

Each weary day,

And sigh as I ponder

My long, long stay

Spohr.

No partings yonder!
Time and space never
Again shall sunder.

Hearts cannot sever:

Dearer and fonder,

Hands clasp for ever.

None wanting yonder!
Bought by the Lamb.
All gathered under

The ever-green palm;
Loud as night's thunder
Ascends the glad psalm.

INDEX TO FIRST LINES OF

HYMNS.

No.

A holy air is breathing round,
A quiet heart, submissive, meek,

A thousand years have come and gone,
A voice upon the midnight air,.
A voice by Jordan's shore,
Abide in me, O Lord, and I in Thee,
Abide with me! fast falls the eventide,
Above this changeful clime,
According to Thy gracious word,
Across the sky, the shades of night,
Again, as evening's shadow falls,
Again returns the day of holy rest,
All around us, fair with flowers,

[blocks in formation]

All as God wills! who wisely heeds,.

501

All before us lies the way,

571

All common things, each day's events,

857

All countries are my Father's lands,

632

All-gracious, all-loving, great Father of Light!

287

All is over-fought the fight,

194

All lands and peoples, all the earth,

All people that on earth do dwell,

15

I

All scenes alike engaging prove,

57

All that's good and great and true,

879

All that in this wide world we see,

61

All things are Thine; no gift have we,

668

All things praise Thee-Lord most high,
All unseen the Master walketh,
Almighty Father, God of love, .

275

892

Almighty Father of mankind,

No.

438

Almighty Father! Thou didst frame,

Amid the din of earthly strife,

298

And art Thou come with us to dwell,

And didst Thou love the race that loved not Thee?

And now, belovéd Lord, Thy soul resigning,

Angels holy,

Another hand is beckoning us,

Another year is dawning, .

Another year of labour gone,

Arm, soldier of the Lord,.

Art Thou the Life? .

Art thou weary, art thou languid,

As with gladness men of old,

Author of light! our Father in the Heaven,

Bear on, my soul! the bitter cross,

Bear Thou my burden, Thou who bear'st my sin,

Because I knew not when my life was good,

Bread of the world, in mercy broken,

Break, new-born year, on glad eyes, break!

Breathe on me, Breath of God,.

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning!

Bring, O morn, thy music! bring, O night, thy silence!

By cool Siloam's shady rill,

Calmly, calmly lay him down, .

Calm me, my God, and keep me calm,

Calm Soul of all things! make it mine,
Captain and Saviour of the host,
Children of the heavenly King, :
Christ cometh not a king to reign,
Christ to the young man said,
Christian! dost thou see them,.
Christian! seek not yet repose,.
City of God! how broad and far,
Come, Holy One, in love,

Come, kingdom of our God!

Come let us join with faithful souls,

597

Come, immortal Lord of gladness!

Come let us join our friends above,

649

Come let us sing a tender song,
Come, O come, in pious lays,

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

Come, O thou Traveller unknown,

64

Come, Thou, oh come,

Come unto Me! so spake the Lowly One,
