Our National Folly ---
Trust Baiting.

The present business depression in the United States,
due largely to our loss of Foreign trade, cries "Halt"
on further attempts by political quacks to injure
foreign trade of our largest business institutions.

by JOHN F. HOGAN.

MAN may be honest, he may be kind, courteous and charitable towards others, clean and honorable in his methods, a good father and husband-in a fact, a real Christian in every way, yet if he wants the respect of the political wart, he must not be a rich man nor must he be identified with a large corporation or trust.

It is not necessary to prove that this man never robbed a bank, deprived a woman of her chastity, committed murder or violated the laws of the land. No, indeed!

He may have lived the most blameless life, still his reputation is not safe from the slanderous attacks of political fakirs, whether they be senators or scavengers. All these parasites want to know, in fact, all they care to know, before firing their poisonous ammunition, is whether the man is rich and is he identified with a trust. All else is ignored-it wouldn't get votes!

The writer does not know Mr. T. D. Jones, whose name was presented by President Wilson to the Senate of the United States for membership on the Federal Reserve Board and his nom

ination requested by the President as a personal favor. Nor has the writer any desire to pose as champion of a gentleman whom he has never met. There is involved, however, an issue higher and more important than the mere question of a man's appointment, and that question is: How much longer will the people be deluded by politicians not statesmen who have forgotten or else ignore the true interests of our country.

The Federal Reserve Board is a big institution and requires big men to run it a corner grocer would be out of place. Talent and ability of the highest degree must be employed, and where is such talent and ability found if not in big corporations? Big_men are always found in these places. T. D. Jones was such a man.

Why was Thomas D. Jones rejected. as a member of the Federal Reserve Board? It was not because he lacked ability or did not understand the duties of the office; not because of disgrace in his family or business life; not because of having committed any crimes or misdemeanors. No, nothing of this character was brought against him. He was no dummy. True, he is an old personal friend of the President,

¶ Respect for each other must precede any settlement between capital and

labor.
