CANNOT recommend to your notice measures for the ful

fillment of our duties to the rest of the world, without again pressing upon you the necessity of placing ourselves in a condition of complete defense and of exacting from them the fulfillment of their duties towards us. YOU ought not io indulge a persuasion that contrary to the order of human events they will forever keep at a distance those painful appeals to arms with which the history of every other nation abounds. There is a rank due to YOU among nations which will be withheld, if not absolutely lost, by the reputation of weakness. If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war.

DIVORCE IS HELL!

SOCIETY IS FOUNDED ON THE FAMILY;
DESTROY THE FAMILY BY DIVORCE
AND SOCIETY FALLS!

by D. J. HEndrie.

IVORCE is the work of the Devil. It spells Hell to the individuals concerned and decay to Society generally. Every nation which practiced divorce has died from it.

The Roman Empire went down because of the loose morals regarding marriage. Society is builded on the family, not on the individual, as a unit. Consequently, separating the family destroys the unit of foundation-then Society crumbles.

The fact that divorce is an evil, undermining the foundation of Society, demands its extermination by Society; or, if that is impossible, then for its decrease to a minimum.

The total total number number of divorces granted in the United States from 1867 to 1887 was 328,716, a yearly average of about 16,000 divorces. From 9,937 divorces granted in 1867, the number for each successive year has steadily grown until in 1886 it was 25,535, an increase of 157 per cent in twenty

years.

As population increased during that same period about 60 per cent, it follows that divorces increased more than two and one-half times as compared with the increase in population.

According to a census report of 1910, 945,625 divorces were granted between 1886 and 1908, nearly three times as many as had been granted during the preceding twenty years.

Nor is this all accounted for by the corresponding increase in population. Whilst there were thirty-eight divorces to 1,000 population between 1866 and 1886, there were seventythree divorces for each 1,000 population between 1886 and 1908, or nearly double during the latter twenty years. Consequently we need not be surprised at a statement made in the meeting of the New York State Marriage and Divorce Commission that, during the year 1912. "There were granted in this country over 100,000 divorces."

Nor at another statement that “In the last forty years 3,700,000 adults were separated by divorces in this country, and more than 5,000,000 persons were affected by these cases.'

Since then the disproportion of increase has become even more striking. One out of every six marriages in

Man may dismiss compassion from his heart but God will never.

¶ God knew what was best for man. His own words, "Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder," are used in every Christian marriage throughout the world today and indicate clearly the origin and indisolubility of the marriage institution. Therefore, man did not make marriage -God made it. According to all Christians, marriage is a divine institution founded and perfected by God himself!

Had man lived up to the divine standard. all would have been well. But man fell and after the first marriage allowed corruption to creep into the law. Even Moses allowed divorce. This went on until Christ came. Then He established anew the sacred bond of Matrimony. The Pharisees tempted Him concerning the question of divorce. Again Christ reiterated the law.

But why go further? To prove marriage is of divine and not of human origin would be needless. Every Christian man and woman of whatever denomination clearly recognizes and accepts this fundamental truth.

Unfortunately all men and women don't practice Christian principles!

Divorce is frowned on by all Chris

tian denominations.

The Reverend George B. Eager, Professor for thirteen years of Biblical and Pastoral Theology in the Lutheran Baptist Theological Seminary, Louis"Christ's Teaching About Marriage," ville, Kentucky, in an article entitled emphasizes the fact that divorce and remarriage is forbidden.

Instructions were given to the delegates taking part in the Episcopal Convention to vote for a Canon proclaiming the absolute indissolubility of the marriage tie.

Other religious denominations have taken action to either prevent divorce or else to make it more difficult to obtain.

He who can conceal his joys is greater than he who can hide his griefs.

If we accept as true that going to church means becoming better quainted with and accepting God's laws and commands, thereby developing true Christians, then we must also conclude that staying away from church means lack of knowledge and indifference to God's commands, which in turn produces indifferent Christians. And indifferent Christians become lax members of society and care little for the many growing Social evils everywhere about them.

just imagine, in this so-called Christian country of ours, more than 55,000,000 of our people are "stay-athomes"! Is it strange, then that the divorce evil has kept pace during the past fifty years with the increase in number of those who don't go to church?

In the Colonial days divorces were granted almost exclusively by acts of the Colonial legislature.

In Canada applications for divorce must be made to the Canadian Parliament and even go up to the Privy Council in England. These proceedThese proceedings were necessarily slow, expensive and public, and explains why Canada had less than 400 divorces in the past fifty years.

When legislatures had the power to give or to withhold divorces, few were granted.

each party well knowing that if the
bonds become too irksome they can be
readily severed within a short time
without much expense. No man or
woman need remain married.
As a natural consequence, mutual love,
trust and forebearance are being
thrown into the discard.

HESE examples of divorce granted on the plea of inhuman treatment are gathered from the court records and are therefore correct:

1. Divorce granted to wife because she
alleged that her husband did not wash
himself, thereby inflicting on her great
mental anguish!

2. Divorce granted to wife because her
husband got drunk the day after the
marriage, causing wife to conceive vio-
lent disgust for him. Divorce proceed-
ings began one day after the marriage.
3. Divorce granted to wife because her
husband used tobacco, thereby aggra-
vating her sick headaches.
4. Divorce granted to wife because her
husband cut off her bangs by force.
5. Divorce granted to wife because her
husband pinched her nose until it be-
came red, thereby causing her mortifi-
cation and anguish.

6. Divorce granted to wife who had
married her husband when he seemed
at the point of death, but he recovered;
hence she asked for a divorce on the
plea of cruelty and fraud!

In the cases just enumerated, the wife was the plaintiff. Here are a few in which the husband appears in that role.

But the moment divorces became a judicial function, they increased amazingly. Law making became the rage. and as a result we find on the statute books divorce laws presenting loopholes for the dissolubility of marriage for every conceivable cause. South Carolina is the only State that 1. Divorce granted to husband because does not grant absolute divorce. In his wife frequently evinced towards. every other State in the Union the him a violent temper. causes declared necessary to secure divorce are so many-and in many instances so trivial-that they become actually an incentive for a man or 3. Divorce granted to husband because woman to indulge in a trial marriage, his wife violently upbraided him, say

2. Divorce granted to husband because his wife struck him a violent blow with

her bustle.

¶ Society is built upon trust and trust upon confidence in one another's integrity.
