Shun stinginess (see Rule 7. FIFTH DECLENSION.

The Genitive denotes

(3.) Time, i. e. a fixed point, or portion of time; as, νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας, at night and in the day.

(4.) Price; as,

ὠνοῦνται τὰς γυναῖκας παρὰ τῶν γονέων μεγάλων χρημάτων. They buy their wives from the parents

at great prices,

(5.) Cause; as,

δείλαιε τοῦ νοῦ, τῆς τε συμφορᾶς ἴσον. Ο unhappy! alike because-of thy state-of-mind, and thy misfor

tune.

(6.) Direction; as,

εvoù ПIελλývns, straight for-Pellene.

(7.) Material; as,

κέρατος δεπάεσσιν ἔπινον, they drank from goblets of horn.

(8.) Partition; as,

Bouλel Tov oivov λaßeiv; will you take [some] of-the wine?

CLASS I. (THREE TERMINATIONS.)

1. — os, n, ov; os, a, ov; pos, pa, pov. (p. 13.) RULE 14.- The Dative indicates :

(1.) The person (or thing) which gains, or receives, is shown, or told anything ; as,

Μενέλαος, ᾧ τόνδε πλοῦν ἐστείλαμεν.

Menelaus, for-whom we despatched this expedition.
τοῖς θανοῦσι πλοῦτος οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖ.
Wealth nought advantages the dead.

EXERCISE ΧΧΧ.

τυρὸς οὐ λείπει με, οὔτε ἐν θέρει, οὔτε ἐν ὀπώρᾳ, οὐ χειμῶνος ἄκρου. (see Gen. (3.) p. 37.) — μᾶλλον ὠφελεῖ τοῖς ναύταις (see Rule 7. EXERCISE XXXI.

Equal nights and days run-their-rounds. -We-have this only way-of-taking Troy (gen.). The treasures of-virtue alone are secure. He-says [that] only (adj.) the treasures

That (ὅτι) it was (εἴη) not possible for the blind (dat. pl.) to-be spectators (see Rule 8. p. 31.) ofthe expedition against-the Scythians (see Gen. (2.) p. 36.) nor to-be useful at-all. — It-is not [the custom] of-the clever robber to-be a fair purchaser, nor of-the plausible sophist to-be a trustworthy teacher. - Owing-to (διὰ with acc.) its (rò) being (say, to-be) night (see Rule 8. p. 31.), nothing was visible to-the two-soldiers.

2. εις, εσσα, εν, υς, εια, υ.

RULE 14. (continued.) - The Dative indicates also, with the sense of an ablative

(2a.) The agent (or person acting) by whom something is done; as,

αἰσχροῖς αἰσχρὰ πράγματα ἐκδιδάσκεται.

By base [-men] base acts are-taught.

(25.) The instrument, or means, by which something is done;

as,

ἀργυρέαις λόγχαισι μάχου, καὶ πάντα κρατήσεις.

Fight with-silver spears and you-will-conquer all-things. (3.) The manner, in which something is done; as, οἱ μὲν σιγῇ, οἱ δὲ πολλῷ θορύβῳ ἐπορεύοντο.

Some marched in-silence; others with-much noise, (4.) The cause, on account-of which something is done ; as, τούτους ἡγεῖτο ἢ ἀκρατείᾳ τινὶ, ἢ ἀδικίᾳ, ἢ ἀμελείᾳ ἀπεῖναι. These he-presumed to-be-absent, either because-of-some temperance, or act-of-injustice, or act-of-thoughtless

EXERCISE XXXIII.

Athene (see Rule 7. (1.) p. 30.) became full-grown in a second (say, in a-short [-time]), having-made-her-appearance out-of the head of Zeus, and (de) she-looks fiercely (neut s. adj.) and has a head tressed with-snakes (dat. (2b.) p. 40.).—He-says [that] the roads in the island are rough. Not only the fair sex (say, the female race), but even those before [so] bold of-the soldiers died from-grievous thirst and hunger (dat. (4.) p. 40.).—We-lengthen short life by-fond hopes (dat. (2b.) p. 40.)—Follow [-thou] in-silence (dat. (3.) p. 40.).—I saw Dodona's speaking oak.-Who hathnot wept-over Edipus, oppressed with-age (dat. (4.)), directing his (see Rule 9. p. 32.) groping feet with-a-staff (dat. (26.) p. 40.).—God shall-crown with-golden crowns those who-walk (τοὺς βαδίζοντας) the straight and narrow way (acc., see p. 46.). — He-opened the doors in-the-middle-of the-night (say, at-midnight (gen (3.) p. 37.).

3. ας, αινα, αν; ας, ασα, αν. (p. 14, 15.) RULE 14. (continued.) — The Dative is found also (5.) After nouns, verbs, and adverbs, signifying equality, or

likeness; as,

τρόπους καὶ δίαιταν σφηξὶν (dat.) ἐμφερέστατοι.

In-manners and mode-of-life very-like wasps.

καὶ τὸν φίλον τιμῶσιν ἐξ ἴσου πατρί (dat.).

And they-honour the friend equally with-the father.
