EXERCISE XXXIV.

μέλαιναν εἶναι οὔ φησι τὴν καρδίαν (see Rule 9. p. 32.). ὦ γύναι, τάλαινα τῆς κακῆς συμφοράς (see Rule 9. p. 32. and Gen. (5.) p. 37.).—δύο εἶδεν ἐπὶ τοῖς κύμασι φαντάσματα, μελαίνας ναυσὶν ὅμοια.—τίς ὅμοια πέπονθε τῇ πανταλαίνῃ θυγατρὶ μητρὸς ταλαίνης;— ὁ λόγος κατέχει, ισοῤῥόπω ἀλλήλοις γεγενῆσθαι τὼ τάλανε ἀδελφώ. — ὁ Ὅμηρος φύλλοις τὸ ἀνθρώπινον γένος ὁμοιοῖ.

EXERCISE XXXV.

It-is [the duty] of-every man, and every woman, to-love God, the common father and preserver of-all [-men] (dat.). -O wretched Troy, thou-didst-lose unnumbered [-heroes] for-the-sake-of one woman. Pericles said, that (örı) no

one ever-yet put-on a-mourning (say, black) garment owingto him (δι' αὐτόν).

[There-] are many (uèv) tongues to-mortal [-men], but one to-immortals. Now (de) many (uèv) of-the soldiers they-took alive; but many the policemen killed afterwards, for they-ran straight-for (gen. 5.) Athens (see Rule 7. (1.) p. 30.). Hector (see Rule 7. EXERCISE XXXVII.

μὴ ἔριζε τοῖς γονεῦσιν, εἰ καὶ ἄρτια καὶ ἔτυμα λέγεις.—ἀεί σύ μου τῷ πλούτῳ προσπολεμεῖς, καὶ φθονεῖς. — ταῖς ἀλλοτρίαις συμφοραῖς ὡς νουθετήμασιν ἰδίοις χρῆσθαι δεῖ. — τίσι γὰρ εἰ μὴ τοῖς ὁμοτραπέζοις καὶ συνεστίοις ὡς φίλοις χρῆσθαι δεῖ; — ὦ μιαρώτατε σὺ, καὶ ἔχθιστε, ὅτι ἀνδρὶ ὁμοτραπέζῳ καὶ συνεστίῳ οὕτω χρῆσθαι τολμᾷς.-Α. οὗτος σὺ, τί κλαίεις; Β. οὐ γὰρ οἶσθα οἷα πέπονθα ὑπὸ τοῦ καταράτου ξένου, ὃς μεθύσας ἐξετύ φλωσέ με ; — ταῖς μὲν τῶν κορῶν ὁμιλεῖν φιλῶ· αἱ δὲ κερτόμοις χρῶνται λόγοις, καὶ οὐ συμπαίξεσθαί ἐμοί φασιν, ὡς “ τὴν βάρβαρον κόρην” λοιδοροῦσαι.—ὁ Ποσειδῶν ἐκέλευσέ με ἀκύμαντον φυλάττειν τὸ πέλαγος.

EXERCISE XXXVIII.

Hephaestus (see Rule 7. (1.) p. 30.) cut-in-two the head of-Zeus with-his (see Rule 9. p. 32.) axe, when (dè) out-of the head sprung Athene, an-armed and full-grown maiden; so (δέ) Hephaestus said that] Zeus was naturally hot-tempered, when-he-had (ἔχοντα) such a-nuisance [as that] in his head. But if the old-man lives beyond [the age of] Tithonus *, and will not die (inf.), it-will-be-necessary, I fancy (ἄρα), to find-out some (τινά) short cut to (ἐπὶ with acc.) his inheritance, either by-hanging (see Dat. (3.) p. 40.) or poison, or some (τινὶ) suitable death. You-tell [me] strange [-things] and well-nigh incredible.

2. αληθής, ές. (p. 16.)

RULE 14. (continued.) - The Dative also follows words signifying

(7) Obedience, or belief; as,

ἐμοὶ ὑπήκοοί εἰσι, they-are subject to-me.

* Every one has heard of Old Parr, who died at the age of 155,in the time of Charles I. Tithonus was the “ Old Parr ” of antiquity.

EXERCISE XXXIX.

πιστεύει μὲν ἅπας τοῖς ἀληθέσι, τοῖς δὲ ψευδέσιν οὐδείς. — εἰ φιλεῖς ἐμὲ, ὡς τῇ (see Rule 9. p. 32.) αληθεῖ μητρὶ πείσομαί σοι.

οἶνον ἐκ πληρῶν κρατήρων ἔπινον, πολυτελῆ δεῖπνα παρασκευασάμενοι. —ὁμολογοῦσι γὰρ ἅπαντες, ἀκριβῆ μὲν εἶναι τὸν δικαστὴν, δίκαιον δὲ μή. — εὖ ποιεῖν δεῖ τοὺς συγγενεῖς. —φιλῶ σου τὼ ἀδελφώ· ἀληθές γάρ εἰσι, καὶ ἐπιεικές τῇ φύσει. ἡ Τόμυρις ἀπέτεμε τὴν τοῦ Κύρου κεφαλὴν, καὶ ἐνέβαλεν εἰς ἀσκὸν, πληρῆ αἵματος. — ἀτελὲς μένει τὸ τεῖχος (see Rule 2. p. 26.). – πλῆρες ἤδη τὸ σκάφος. — οἴμοι τῶν κακῶν· (see Gen. (5.) p. 37.) ἤδη γὰρ πλέουσιν. — ἀληθεύει μὲν, ὥς φασιν, πρὸς τὸν ἀληθῆ, πρὸς δὲ τὴν ἀλωπεκα αλωπεκίζει.

EXERCISE XL.

The goblets are full of-wine. — We-must (δεῖ with infin.) obey the decision of-the-two strict judges.-You-are not my (see Rule 9. p. 32.) true mother; yet, if you love me, I will obey you. O costly banquets, from-which (v) no-one gets-off scot-free, how little (οὐκ) I-regret you ὑμᾶς). - It-is not [the part] of-a-religious man to-tell falsehoods (say, false [-things]). It-is-necessary for-children to-obey the commands of their (see Rule 9. p. 32.) father.

3. εὔχαρις, ι; ἄρσην, εν; σώφρων, ον. (p. 16, 17.) RULE 15.-The Accusative —

Is often found after in-trans-it-ive verbs, if it have a meaning like that of the verb; and is then called the cognate (or kindred) accusative; as,

εἶμι τλημονεστάτην ὁδόν.

I-will-go-on my-most-wretched way.

ἄχαριν ἔρωτα ἐρᾷ ὁ ἄνθρωπος.—ὦ κακόδαιμον πάτερ, ὅτι οὕτως ἄχαριν ἔχεις παῖδα.—νενίκηκεν οὖν πυξ, καὶ πάλην, καὶ δρόμον ἐν Ολυμπία μιᾶς ἡμέρας (see Gen. (3.) p. 37.).— ἡ θάλασσα εὐθὺς ἀκύμων ἐγένετο καὶ λεία. —τοῦ μὲν οὖν ἀστείου καὶ εὐχάριτός

ἐστὶν εὖ λέγειν ἅπαντας τοὺς γὰρ κακολόγους οὐδεὶς οὔτ ̓ ἀστεί ους οὔτ ̓ εὐχάριτας νομίζει.—εἰ ἰδεῖν θέλεις ἅπαντα, οὐκ ἔνεστιν ἄμφω, καὶ ἀσφαλῆ καὶ φιλοθεάμονα εἶναι.— οὐκ ἔστιν ἄνθρωπος ὃς τὴν κακοδαίμονα ὁδὸν θανάτου οὐκ εἰσι. ἄπιθι εἰς τὸν τῶν ἀσεβῶν χῶρον· ταχεῖαν γὰρ σοι καὶ ἀπράγμονα αποδείξω ἀτραπόν. — τοῖς μέν φίλοις ἀπροσήγορος, τοῖς δὲ γείτοσιν ἀγείτων ἦν. — εὐχὰς εὔχου ἀνωφελεῖς, ὦ ἄνερ. — οἴμοι τῆς μωρίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων, οἳ τοσοῦτον ἔρῶτα ἐρῶσι χρυσοῦ, ὠχροῦ καὶ βαρέος κτήματος.

EXERCISE XLII.

The wretched [-women ] remained from-morning till evening without-food (say, unfed). - Neighbours (see Rule 7. (2.) p. 30.) are often of all other-men (ἄλλων) the-most (adv.) unneighbourly. - For in-that-country (say, there) not only males (see Rule 7. (2.) p. 30.), but also the fair sex (say, the female race) take-part-in battles (gen.), fighting with-their (see Rule 9. p. 32.) nails, ay and even with-their teeth. Now, when-he-saw (ἰδὼν δὲ) that (ὅτι) his wife hadborne male children, he-feasted his friends. -It-is not becoming to-pretty girls to-be proud (see Rule 8. p. 31.). For of-male (see Rule 7. (2.) p. 30.) children in-our-country (say, amongst us, ἡμῖν) we-inscribe the eldest, heir of-all (pl.). — I-will not tread the happy path of-life, but the wise [one]. - Ο Crœsus, few [are] the happy [ones], but many [are] the unhappy [that] I-have-seen.

4. εὔνους, ουν. (p. 18.)

RULE 15. (continued.) - The Accusative indicates (1.) SPACE :

(a.) Of time, during which something takes place; as, ὁ ἀηδὼν θρηνεῖ τὴν νύκτα.

The nightingale mourns (all) the night.

This is called the accusative of duration of time. (b.) Of distance; as,

ἡ Πλαταία ἀπέχει τῶν Θηβῶν σταδίους ἑβδομήκοντα. Platea is distant from-Thebes seventy stades.

ὁ δὲ σταθμὸς ἀπέχει τοῦ προτέρου εἴκοσι σταδίους μάλιστα. — ἀπόβλεψον ἐκεῖσε εἰς τὴν μεγάλην ακρόπολιν, καὶ εἰπέ μοι, πόσους σταδίους ἡμῶν ἀπέχειν δοκεῖ. — ὁ Μωϋσης ἦγε τοὺς Εβραίους εἰς τὴν μελίῤῥουν γῆν Παλαιστίνης τεσσαράκοντα μάλιστα ἔτη· μελίῤῥους δὲ δικαίως ἐκαλεῖτο· ἐκεῖ γὰρ καὶ τὰ δένδρα μελίῤῥοα ἦν. — ὦ ἡδύπνοι αὖραι ἡδυπνῶν ὀνείρων. — ὁ Ηρόδοτος ἔφη μελάγχρους εἶναι τοὺς Κολχούς.—ποιώμεθα αὐτοῦ τὴν ἕδραν φιλῶ γὰρ τὸ εὔπνουν τοῦ τόπου.—τῶν εὐγενῶν ἵππων εὔπνοί εἰσιν οἱ μυκτῆρες. — πέντε ἡμέρας καὶ νύκτας συνεχῆ ἑορτὴν ἦγον ἐπὶ τῷ οἴκαδε νόστῳ τῶν σύμπλων. — οὐ πολὺν χρόνον, ὦ Μοῖρα, αἰτῶ, μόνην με ἔασον μεῖναι τήνδε ἡμέραν.

EXERCISE XLIV.

Where are the enemy (pl.)? - They-are-distant about six furlongs. They-were-said to-be-distant about fifteen furlongs. The horse is well-bred; for see how wide its (see Rule 9. p. 32.) nostrils (du.) are. -We-treat the favourably-disposed as friends (dat. (6.) p. 40.), but the ill-disposed as enemies. It-is agreeable (μεν), but not just, to-have a friend (ἀνήρ φίλος) and [one-] favourably-disposed as our (see Rule 9. p. 32.) judge.

5. δίπηχυς, υ. (p. 10. 18.)

RULE 15. (continued.)- The Accusative indicates also(2.) The part affected, e. g. by the action of the verb; as, πληγεὶς τὴν κεφαλὴν πελεκεῖ.

EXERCISE XLV.

ὁ Γιγαντολέτωρ ἐκάθητο ἐν τῷ Ὀλύμπῳ δεκάπηχυν κεραυνὸν ἔχων ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ. —ἐν τοῖς τῶν Αἰγυπτίων συμποσίοις περιφέρει ἀνὴρ ξύλινον νεκρὸν δίπηχυν, ἐν σόρῳ διπηχεῖ· δεικνὺς δὲ ἑκάστῳ τῶν συμποτῶν λέγει, “ἐς τοῦτο ὁρῶν πᾶνε καὶ τέρπου· ἔσει γὰρ ἀποθανὼν τοιοῦτος.” — οἱ δὲ Νομάδες εἶχον κροκοδείλους τρι
