FIFTH DECLENSION. Im-pari-syllabic (or, increasing in the genitive). Terminations: numerous, and of all genders; but three, a, The Vocative case is generally like the nominative; but, 1. Nouns in -p, -wp, -wv, which shorten the long in the oblique cases, retain it short in the vocative; as, 3. Nouns in -as, -avros form the vocative in -av; as, DECLENSIONS OF CONTRACT SUBSTANTIVES. All Contract nouns belong really to the fifth declension of Simples, and in their uncontracted forms are declined exactly the same way. FIRST DECLENSION. Two terminations: -ŋs, masc., and of proper names only. FOURTH DECLENSION. Two terminations : πως, -ω, both feminine ; as, ἡ αἰδὼς, shame ; ἡ φειδώ, parsimony. One termination : -ας, neut. ; as, τὸ κέρας, a horn. Words in -aç, of neuter gender, are often declined like σῶμα, not being contracted at all; as, τέρας, a portent, gen. τέρατος. NOUNS ADJECTIVE. CLASS I. (THREE TERMINATIONS.) 1. In -ος, -η, -ο v, when the mos is not pure (i.e. not preceded by a vowel or ῥ), 28, καλός, -ή, -όν, beautiful. 2. In-os, -a, -ov; when the -os is pure (i. e. preceded by a vowel or ῥ), as, δίκαιος, -α, -or, just; Masc. Γ. Ν. Ν. καλὸς τὴ τὸν G. καλοῦ τῆς τοῦ D. καλῷ τῇ τῷ Α. καλὸν τὴν τὸν V. καλέ - -ὸν ἐχθροὺς, τὰ, τὸν, hostile. N.A.V. -w -a 3. Ιη –εις, εσσα, εν; as, χαρίεις, pleasing. |
