Names

(1) We are not to understand thefe Words as fpoken abfolutely, but compara tively. The meaning therefore is not, that it was no Matter of Rejoicing, that they had Power given them against the Devil and hisInftruments, and that the Evil Spirits were fubject to them in Chrift's Name; but the Senfe of them, according to an ufual Hebraifm, is, that they had a much greater Reafon to rejoice, because their Names were written in Heaven. In which Words there is an Allufion to a known Custom in many Cities, namely, to write in a Catalogue or Book, the Names of those who were Free, and had a.Right to the Privileges thereof. And they denote God's infallible Remembrance of his faithful Servants.

The Notion of an abfolute Election of fome particular Perfons to Eternal Life, exclufively of others, cannot be proved from thefe Words For they relate only to the prefent Right to Eternal Life, on the Conditi ons of the Gospel of Faith, which thofe had to whom they were spoken, and not to any thing future, which is manifeft from the Ufe of this Phrafe in Scripture, by which it will appear, that thofe who were writ ten in the Book of God, might, for their Difobedience, be blotted out. Thus, Exod 32 33. The Lord faid unto Mofes, Whosoever bath finned against me, him will I blot out of my Book. And our Lord, Rev. 22. 19. threatens fome, that he would take away their Part out of the Book of Life. See Dr. Whitby on Phil. 4. 3.
