trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and

alms-deeds which she did. Ac. ix. 36. A devout man (was Cornelius), and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. And he (the angel of the Lord in a vision) said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. Thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. Ac. x. 2.4. 31. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea. Ac. xi. 29. After many years (said Paul) I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings. Ac. xxiv. 17. He that giveth let him do it with simplicity. Ro. xii. 8. He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 2 Co. ix. 6. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly, or of necessity, for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that ye, always having sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work, being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth, through us, thanksgiving to God; for the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. 2 Co. ix. 6-15. Only "they" ("James, Cephas, and John") would that "we" ("Paul and Barnabas") should remember the poor, the same which I also was forward to do. Ga. ii. 10. Let him that stole, steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Ep. iv. 28. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate. 1 Ti. vi. 18. We have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. Phile. 7. To do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. He. xiii. 16. If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? Ja. ii. 15, 16. If any man minister let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ. 1 Pe. iv. 11. Whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed, and in truth; and hereby we know VOL. II.

that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 1 John iii. 17—19. Do not sound a trumpet.] Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? Pr. xx. 6. Set the trumpet to thy mouth, he shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. Hos. viii. 1. As the hypocrites do. See verse 5. Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Mat. vii. 5. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Mat. xv. 7, 8. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times. Mat. xvi. 3. Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites (said Jesus to the Pharisees)? Mat. xxii. 18. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Mat. xxiii. 13, 14-29. The Lord of that servant (who was cruel to his fellow-servants in his absence) shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. Mat. xxiv. 51. The Lord shall have no joy in their (Israel's) young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless, and widows; for every one is an hypocrite, and an evil doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. Is. ix. 17. I will send "him" ("the Assyrian") against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath, will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the street. Is. x. 6. Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Mar. vii. 6. Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. Lu. vi. 42. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it that ye do not discern this time? Lu. xii. 56. The Lord then answered "him" (“the ruler of the synagogue") and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox, or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? Lu. xiii. 15.

In the synagogues, &c.] See verse 5. The Scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat, and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues. Mat. xxiii. 6. Beware of the Scribes, which love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts. Glory of men.] I have sinned (said Saul to Samuel), yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God. 1 Sa. xv. 30. I (said Jesus) receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not. If another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only. John v. 41-44. He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. John vii. 18. Nor of men sought we glory (said Paul), neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome as the apostles of Christ. 1 The. ii. 6.

Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.] See verses 5. 16. Verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Mat. v. 18.

3 Let not thy left hand, &c.] See thou tell no man (said Jesus to the leper), but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded for a testimony unto them. Mat. viii. 4. Jesus straitly charged them (the blind men whom he restored to sight), saying, See that no man know it. Mat. ix. 30. He (said Esaias of the Messiah) shall not strive nor cry, neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. Mat. xii. 19. See thou say nothing to any man (said Jesus to the leper), but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, &c. Mar. i. 44. There is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly if thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. John vii. 4.

4 Seeth in secret.] See verses 6. 18. Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing. Ps. xvii. 3. If we have forgotten the name of our God, shall not God search this out? For he knoweth the secrets of the heart. Ps. xliv. 21. O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me; thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising. Thou understandest my thought afar off.

Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways; yea, the darkness hideth not from thee, but the night shineth as the day. The darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Ps. cxxxix. 1, 2, 3. 12. I, the Lord, search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doing. Je. xvii. 10. Can any hide himself in secret places, that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord. Je. xxiii. 24. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. He. iv. 13. All the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts. Re. ii. 23.

Reward thee openly.] Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Mat. x. 42. Come ye blessed of my Father (said the king in Christ's description of the last judgment), inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Mat. xxv. 34. Them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 1 Sa. ii. 30. Nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Lu. viii. 17. Thou (who makest a feast for the poor) shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Lu. xiv. 14. Judge nothing before the time until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Co. iv. 5. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy; the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty dominion, and power, both now and ever. Ju. 24.

Amen.

5 When thou prayest, &c.] Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you; for every one that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Mat. vii. 7, 8. Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. Mat. ix. 38. All things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Mat. xxi. 22. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King,

not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou 6

and my God, for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Ps. v. 2, 3. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud, and he shall hear my voice. Ps. lv. 17. The prayer of the upright is his delight. Pr. xv. 8. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found; call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. lv. 6, 7. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go, and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you (saith the Lord). Je. xxix. 12. When Daniel knew that the writing (the ensnaring decree) was signed (by king Darius), he went into his house, and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. Da. vi. 10. And I prayed unto the Lord my God (said Daniel), and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments. Da. ix. 4. And he (Jesus) spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. Lu. xviii. 1. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. John xvi. 24. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Ep. vi. 18. Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving. Withal, praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds. Col. iv. 2, 3. Pray without ceasing. 1 The. v. 17. The prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. Pray one for another, that ye may be healed. Ja. v. 15, 16.

Thou shalt not be as the hypocrites.] See verse 2. and com. What is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him? Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call upon God? Job xxvii. 8-10. When ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when ye make many prayers I will not hear; your hands are full of blood. Is. i. 15. Two men went up

into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican; the Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself; God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. Lu. xviii. 10, 11. Beware of the Scribes, which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers. Lu. xx. 47.

For they love to pray standing, &c.] They (the Pharisees) love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues. Mat. xxiii. 6. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.] See verse 2. and com. Every one that is proud of heart is an abomination to the Lord, though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. Pr. xvi. 5. When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours, lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind; and thou shalt be blessed, for they cannot recompense thee, for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Lu. xiv. 12-14. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Ja. iv. 6.

6 Enter into thy closet.] And when "he" ("Jesus") had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray, and when the evening was come he was there alone. Mat. xiv. 23. Then cometh Jesus with them (his disciples) unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. Mat. xxvi. 36. And he took with him Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me; and he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. Mat. xxvi. 37-39. And Jacob was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him, until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint as he

it were, for a little moment, until the indig-
nation be overpast. Is. xxvi. 20. Whence
knowest thou me (said Nathaniel)? Jesus an-
swered and said unto him, Before that Philip
called thee, when thou wast under the fig-
tree, I saw thee. John i. 48. Peter (entering
the chamber where Tabitha lay dead) put them
all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed, and
turning him to the body, said, Arise and she
opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she
sat up.
Ac. ix. 40. On the morrow, as they
went on their journey, and drew nigh unto
the city (Joppa), Peter went up upon the
house-top to pray about the sixth hour. Four
days ago (said Cornelius), I was fasting until
this hour, and the ninth hour I prayed in my
house, and behold, a man stood before me in
bright clothing. Ac. x. 9. 30.

Pray to thy Father.] The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. Ps. xxxiv. 15. It shall come to pass (said God) that before they (the Jews) call I will answer, and while they are yet speaking I will hear. Is. lxv. 24. Jesus saith unto her (Mary, to whom he appeared after his resurrection), Touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. John xx. 17. They that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit, the things of the spirit. Ro. viii. 5. For this cause (that they faint not at Paul's tribulation) I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ep. iii. 14.

7 Use not vain repetitions.] And they (priests or prophets of Baal) took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal! hear us! but there was no voice, nor any that answered; and they leaped upon the altar which was made. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah (the prophet of the Lord) mocked them, and said, Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked: and they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. And it came

to pass when mid-day was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. 1 Ki. xviii. 26-29. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God, for God is in heaven and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few, for a dream cometh through the multitude of business, and a fool's voice is known by the multitude of words: for in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities; but fear thou God. Ec. v. 2, 3. 7. When they knew that "he" ("Paul") was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. Ac. xix. 34.

Repetitions.] And he (Jesus) went a little farther, and fell on his face and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Mat. xxvi. 39-44. Now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified (said Solomon) which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father; but will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven, and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded. Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Lord my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee to-day: that thine eyes may be opened toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there; that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place, &c. &c. And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the Lord, he arose from before the altar of the Lord, from kneeling on his knees, with his hands spread up to heaven. 1 Ki viii. 26-29, &c. 54. O my God, incline thine ear and hear; open thine eyes and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name, for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness,

but for thy great mercies. O Lord, hear (said Daniel); O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do, defer not for thine own sake, O my God, for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. Da. ix. 18, 19.

The heathen do.] See verse 32. If he (thy brother who trespasseth against thee) neglect to hear the Church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican. Mat. xviii. 17. 8 Your Father knoweth.] See verse 32. Lord, all my desire is before thee, and my groaning is not hid from thee. Ps. xxxviii. 9. Hide not thy face from thy servant, for I am in trouble; hear speedily, draw nigh unto my soul and redeem it; deliver me because of mine enemies; thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour; mine adversaries are all before thee. Ps. lxix. 17, 18, 19. Your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things (what ye shall eat and what ye shall drink, &c.). Lu. xii. 30. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name; ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. The time cometh (said Jesus) when I shall no more speak to you in proverbs: at that day ye shall ask in my name, and I say not unto you that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father himself loveth you because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. John xvi. 23-27. Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. Phi. iv. 6.

9 This manner therefore pray ye.] Lord, teach us to pray (said one of his disciples to Jesus), as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, &c. Lu. xi. 1. 2.

Our Father which art in heaven, &c.] See verses 1. 6. 14. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Mat. v. 16. 48. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him. Mat. vii. 11. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing, and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. Mat. x. 29. I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine (said Jesus to his disciples) until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's king

dom. O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it, thy will be done. Mat. xxvi. 29. 42. Doubtless thou art our Father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not thou, O Lord, art our Father, our Redeemer, thy name is from everlasting. Is. lxiii. 16. But now, O Lord, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our Potter, and we all are the work of thy hand. Is. lxiv. 8. I will arise, and go to my father (said the prodigal in the purable), and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee: (and again) Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. Lu. xv. 18. 21. Jesus saith unto "her" ("Mary," to whom he appeared after his resurrection), Touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to my Father, but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and to your God. John xx. 17. Grace to you, and peace (said Paul) from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Ro. i. 7. Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Ro. viii. 15. Paul, an apostle (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead), unto the Churches of Galatia. Ga. i. 1. Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Ga. iv. 6. If ye call on the Father, who, without respect of persons, judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. 1 Pe. i. 17.

Which art in heaven.] Call no man your father upon earth, for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Mat. xxiii. 9. O Lord God of our fathers (said king Jehoshaphat in prayer), art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? 2 Ch. xx. 6. But our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Ps. cxv. 3. Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit. Is. lvii. 15. Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? Is. lxvi. 1.

Hallowed be thy name. e.] Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the Lord spake, I will
