27 calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is 28 this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs,

waters should not pass his commandment;
when he appointed the foundations of the
earth (I, wisdom, was set up from everlasting).
Pr. viii. 28, 29. When I came (saith Christ)
was there no man; when I called was there
none to answer? is my hand shortened at all,
that it cannot redeem? or have I no power
to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up
the sea; I make the rivers a wilderness; their
fish stinketh because there is no water, and
dieth for thirst; I clothe the heavens with
blackness, and I make sackcloth their cover-
ing. The Lord God hath given me the tongue
of the learned, that I should know how to
speak a word in season to him that is weary;
he wakeneth morning by morning; he waken-
eth mine ear to hear as the learned. Is. 1.
2-4. Where is he (said the Lord) that
brought them up out of the sea, with the
shepherd of his flock? where is he that put
his holy Spirit within him? Is. lxiii. 11. He
rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry; and
drieth up all the rivers. Na. i. 4. Was the
Lord displeased against the rivers? was thine
anger against the rivers? was thy wrath
against the sea, that thou didst ride upon
thine horses, and thy chariots of salvation?
Hab. iii. 8. And he (Jesus) arose, and re-
buked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace,
be still; and the winds ceased, and there was
a great calm.
And he said unto them, Why
are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no
faith? And they feared exceedingly, and
said one to another, What manner of man is
this, that even the wind and the sea obey
him? Mar. iv. 39-41. And "he" ("Jesus")
saw them (his disciples) toiling in rowing (for
the wind was contrary unto them); and about
the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto
them, walking upon the sea, and would have
passed by them, but when they saw him
walking upon the sea, they supposed it had
been a spirit, and cried out (for they all saw
him, and were troubled), and immediately he
talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of
good cheer, it is I, be not afraid; and he went
up unto them into the ship, and the wind
ceased; and they were sore amazed in them-
selves beyond measure, and wondered. Mar.
vi. 48-51. And they (the disciples) came to
him, and awoke him, saying, Master, Master,
we perish: then he arose, and rebuked the
wind, and the raging of the water, and they
ceased, and there was a calm. And he said

unto them, Where is your faith? And they
being afraid, wondered, saying one to another,
What manner of man is this? for he com-

mandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. Lu. viii. 24, 25. And he (the

mighty angel) had in his hand a little book open; and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth. Re. x. 2.

27 Marvelled.] They that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. Mat. xiv. 33. | The multitude wondered when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. Mat. xv. 31. And they were all amazed (at the casting out of the unclean spirit), insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mar. i. 27. And he (Jesus) went up unto them into the ship, and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. Mar. vi. 51. And (the people) were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. Mar. vii. 37.

28 When he was come to the other side.] And they (Jesus and his disciples) came over unto the other side, into the country of the Gadarenes. Mar. v. 1. They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. La. viii. 26. God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost, and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Ac. x. 38.

Gergesenes.] Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, and the Jebusite, and the Emorite, and the Girgasite. Ge. x. 15, 16. Unto thy seed (said God to Abraham) have 1 given this land; the Kenites, &c. &c. and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. Ge. xv. 21. When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou: thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them, &e. De. vii. 1, 2.

Coming out of the tombs.] When he (Jesus) was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had kis dwelling among the tombs, and no man could bind him, no not with chains, because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces; neither

exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And, 29 behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? And there was a good way off from them an herd of 30

could any man tame him: and always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones. Mar. v. 2-5. And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee; and when he (Jesus) went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most High? I beseech thee torment me not. For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him, and he was kept bound with chains, and in fetters, and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness. Lu. viii. 26-29.

So that no man might pass by that way.] In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways. Ju. v. 6.

29 What have we to do with thee?] And the king (David) said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah (Abishai and Joab); so let him (Shimei) curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David; who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so ? 2 Sa. xvi. 10. What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? Shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel; for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel. 2 Sa. xix. 22. What have ye to do with me, O Tyre and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine ? Will ye render me a recompence (saith the Lord)? And if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head. Joel iii. 4. Let us alone (said the man with an unclean spirit); what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. Mar. i. 24. What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God (said the man possessed of the legion)? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. Mar. v. 7. Let us alone: what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth (said the man with the spirit of an unclean devil)? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. Lu. iv. 34. When he (who had the legion) saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God

most high? I beseech thee torment me not. Lu. viii. 28. Woman, what have I to do with thee (said Jesus to his mother)? mine hour is not yet come. John ii. 4.

Thou Son of God.] See chap. iv. 3, and com. Unclean spirits when they saw him fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. Mar. iii. 11. And devils also came out of many, crying out and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them, suffered them not to speak; for they knew that he was Christ. Lu. iv. 41. The same (the damsel possessed with a spirit of divination) followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation. Ac. xvi. 17. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe and tremble. Ja. ii. 19.

Torment us before the time.] If God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, &c. 2 Pe. ii. 4. 9. And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains, under darkness, unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 6.

30 An herd of many swine, &c.] These shall ye not eat; the camel, the cony, and the hare, and the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud, he is unclean to you. Le. xi. 7. These ye shall not eat; the camel, the hare, and the cony, and the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase. De. xiv. 8. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people; a people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick, which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments; which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels. Is. lxv. 3, 4. He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood. Is. lxiii. 3. Now (whilst Jesus was entreated by him who had the legion) there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. Mar. v. 11. And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain, and they (the legion) besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. Lu. viii. 32. And he (the pro

And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished

digal son) went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat, and no man gave unto him. Lu. xv. 15, 16.

31 The devils besought him.] And he (possessed of the legion) cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. Mar. v. 7. 12. And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion; because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him, that he would not command them to go out into the deep. And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain; and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them, and he suffered them. Then went the devils out of the man and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. Lu. viii. 30-33. Rejoice ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth, and of the sea; for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath; because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. Re. xii. 12. And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. Re. xx. 1, 2.

32 Go, &c.] And the Lord said unto him (the spirit persuading Ahab to go against Ramoth Gilead), Wherewith? (wilt thou persuade him?) And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do So. 1 Ki. xxii. 22. Hast thou not made an hedge about "him" (" Job," said Satan to the Lord), and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power, only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. Job i. 10-12. the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou consi

And

dered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? And still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan answered the Lord and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life; put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand, but save his life. Job ii. 3—6. Him (Jesus) being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Ac. ii. 23. Of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. Ac. iv. 27, 28. And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison. Re. xx. 7.

The whole herd of swine, &c.] And there was a day when his (Job's) sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, and there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away, yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burnt up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away; yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house. And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. Job i. 13-19. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal, and he sat down among the

in the waters. And they that kept them fled, and went their 33 ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils. And, behold, the whole city came 34 out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

CHAPTER IX.

AND he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his 1

ashes. Job ii. 7, 8. Jesus gave them (the legion) leave, and the unclean spirits went out and entered into the swine, and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand) and were choked in the sea. Mar. v. 13. Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine, and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. Lu. viii. 33.

33 They that kept them fled.] And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country, and they went out to see what it was that was done. And they came to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. Mar. v. 14-16. When they that fed them (the swine) saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city, and in the country. Then they went out to see what was done, and came to Jesus, and found the man out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed. Lu. viii. 34-36. The evil spirit answered and said (to the sons of Sceva), Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? and the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell on them all; and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. Ac. xix. 14-16.

34 They besought him.] See verse 29. Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire (with which the mountain did burn) will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then we shall die. De. v. 25. And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem, and the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? 1 Sa. xvi. 4. And she (the widow of Zarephath) said

unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? Art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 1 Ki. xvii. 18. And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? 1 Ki. xviii. 17. They (the wicked) say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. Job xxi. 14. Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden, which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? Job xxii. 17. I beseech thee torment me not. Lu. viii. 28. Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them, for they were taken with great fear; and he went up into the ship, and returned back again. Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee; and he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him. Lu. viii. 37–39. And they came and besought "them" (" Paul and Silas"), and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. Ac. xvi. 39.

2 They brought to him a man sick of the palsy.] See Mat. iv. 24. and viii. 16. and com. At even when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. Mar. i. 32. And again he entered into Capernaum. After some days it was noised that he was in the house, and straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no not so much as about the door, and he preached the word unto them; and they come unto him bringing one sick of the palsy which was borne of four. Mar. ii. 1-3. And behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy; and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him; and when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went upon the house top, and let him down through the tiling, with his couch, into the midst before Jesus. Lu. v. 18, 19. Believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, at the least, the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits, and they were healed every one. Ac. v. 14, 15, 16. So that from his (Paul's) body were brought unto the sick, handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Ac. xix. 12.

Seeing their faith.] See Mat. viii. 10. and com. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was, and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. Mar. ii. 4, 5. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the house top, and let him down through the tiling, with his couch, into the midst before Jesus. Be of good cheer.] Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. Ps. xxxii. 1, 2. Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. Ec. ix. 7. I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions, and as a cloud thy sins; return unto me, for I have redeemed thee. Is. xliv. 22. This shall be the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God; and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord? for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Je. xxxi. 33, 34. And when he saw their faith he said unto "him" (" the man taken with the palsy"), Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. Lu. v. 20. Wherefore I say unto thee (said Jesus to Peter), Her sins (of the woman who anointed Jesus' feet), which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee, go in peace. La. vii. 47-50.
