33 dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It 34 was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth 35 out devils through the prince of the devils. And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness

("Jesus") charged them that they should tell no man (of his curing the man that was deaf); but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it. Mar. vii. 36.

32 A dumb man, &c.] Then was brought unto him one possessed of a devil, blind and dumb, and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. Mat. xii. 22. One of the multitude said (unto Jesus), Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit. And they brought him unto him; when Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more into him; and Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. Mar. ix. 17. 20. 25. 27. And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb; and it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake, and the people wondered. Lu. xi. 14.

33 The dumb spake.] See verse 32. Great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet, and he healed them, insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see. And they glorified the God of Israel. Mat. xv. 30, 31.

And the Lord said unto "him" ("Moses"), who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. Ex. iv. 11, 12. Then, (in the flourishing state of Christ's kingdom), shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing. Is. xxxv. 6. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech, and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And (they) were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well. He maketh both the deaf to

hear and the dumb to speak. Mar. vii. 32-37.

It was never so seen in Israel.] Let him (Naaman) come now to me (said Elisha), and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. 2 Ki. v. 8. In Judah is God known, his name is great in Israel. Ps. lxxii. 1. The Lord of hosts is his name; for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt even unto this day, and in Israel and among other men, and hast made thee (Israel) a name unto this day. Je. xxxii. 20. I have not found so great faith (as that of the centarion), no not in Israel (said Jesus). Lu. vii. 9.

34 The Pharisees said, &c.] When the Pharisees heard it (that Christ healed the man that was blind and dumb), they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. Mat. xii. 24. And the Scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. Mar. iii. 22. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. Lu. xi. 15. Every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. John. iii. 20.

35 Jesus went about all the cities.] See chap. iv. 23, 24. When Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. The poor have the Gospel preached unto them (said Jesus to John's disciples). Mat. xi. 1. 5. All the city was gathered together at the door (where Jesus healed those that were diseased). All men seek for thee (said his disciples). And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also for therefore came I forth. And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee. Mar. i. 33. 37-39. And he went round about the villages teaching. And whi thersoever he entered into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment, and as many as touched him were made whole. Mar. vi. 6. 56. I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities (said Jesus) also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. Lu. iv, 43, 44. And he went through the cities, and villages,

and every disease among the people. But when he saw the mul- 36 titudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, 37

teaching and journeying towards Jerusalem. Lu. xiii. 22. Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you, by miracles, and wonders, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know (him ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain). Ac. ii. 22, 23.

36 When he saw the multitude.] See chap. xx. 34. Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. Mat. xiv. 14. I have compassion on the multitude (said Jesus to his disciples), because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. Mat. xv. 32. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. Mar. vi. 34. We have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. He. iv. 15. Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. He. v. 2. See chap. xiv. 14; xv. 32.

As sheep having no shepherd.] Go rather (than to the Gentiles) to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Mat. x. 6. I am not sent (said Jesus to the woman of Canaan) but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Mat. xv. 24. Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh (said Moses to the Lord), set a man over the congregation, which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepberd. Nu. xxvii. 17. And he (the prophet Micaiah) said (unto Ahab king of Israel), I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd. And the Lord said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace. 1 Ki. xxii. 17. I did see all Israel (said Micaiah) scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. These have no master; let them return therefore every man to his own home. 2 Chr. xviii. 16. All ye beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all ye beasts in the forest. His watchmen are blind; they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds

that cannot understand; they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Is. lvi. 9, 10, 11. My people hath been lost sheep, their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains, they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place. Je. 1. 6. "Ye" (“the shepherds of Israel") eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed; but ye feed not the flock. The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them. And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd; and they became meat to all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill; yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them. Ex. xxxiv. 3-6. The idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled because there was no shepherd. Zec. x. 2. For lo! I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still; but he shall eat the flesh of fat, and tear their claws in pieces. Zec. xi. 16. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die. But the third shall

be left therein. Zec. xiii. 7, 8.

Go ye

37 The harvest truly is plenteous.] Go ye, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Mat. xxviii. 19. into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. Mar. xvi. 15. The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Lu. x. 2. Thus it is written, and thus it behoveth Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47. Say not ye (said

38 but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

CHAPTER X.

1 AND when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave

Jesus), There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. John iv. 35, 36. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; there stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us (to preach the Gospel). Ac. xvi. 9. I am with thee (said the Lord to Paul), and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee, for I have much people in "this city" (" Corinth"). Ac. xviii. 10. But the labourers are few.] The Lord gave the word, great was the company of those that published it. Ps. lxviii. 11. For we are labourers together with God. Ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. 1 Co. iii. 9. We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also, that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. 2 Co. vi. 1. I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort when I know your state; for I have no man like-minded who will naturally care for your state, for all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. Phi. ii. 19, 20, 21. "These" only ("Aristarchus, and Marcus, and Jesus, which is called Justus") are my fellow workers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me. Col. iv. 11. We beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. 1 Th. v. 12, 13. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour; especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 1 Ti. v. 17.

38 Pray ye therefore, &c.] It came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named Apostles. Lu. vi. 12, 13. And as they (the prophets and teachers in the church in Antioch) ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. Ac. xiii. 2. Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you. 2 Th. iii. 1.

The Lord of the harvest.] And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness, and all manner of disease. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: the first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Lebbæus, whose surname was Thaddeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Mat. x. 1-4. Then said Jesus to them (his disciples), Peace be unto you; as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. John xx. 21. And he (Jesus) gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors, and teachers. Ep. iv. 11.

That he will send forth labourers, &c.] The Lord gave the word, great was the company of those that published it. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men, yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them. Ps. lxviii. 11. 18. I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. Je. iii. 15. And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people, as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men. Mi. v. 7. After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face, into every city and place whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Lu. x. 1, 2. They that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Ac. viii. 4. And God hath set some in the church; first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers; after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 1 Co. xii. 28.

CHAP. X.-1 Called unto him his twelve disciples.] Jesus said unto them (his disciples), Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed me in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Mat. xix. 26.

them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Now the names 2 of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called

As they (his disciples) were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude, with swords, and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Mat. xxvi. 20. 47. And he (Jesus) goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would; and they came unto him. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach. Mar. iii. 13, 14. And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two, and gave them power over unclean spirits, and commanded them, that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only, no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse, &c. Mar. vi. 7, 8. When it was day (after a night of prayer), he (Jesus) called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles. Lu. vi. 13. Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? John vi. 70. And there appeared a great wonder in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. Re. xii. 1. And (the great city) had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Re. xxi. 12, 13, 14.

He gave them power.] See chap. vi. 13, and com. Jesus came and spake unto them (his disciples), saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth; go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Mat. xxviii. 18, 19. He ordained twelve to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils. Mar. iii. 15. And these signs shall follow them that believe (said Jesus); in my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mar. xvi. 17, 18. Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases; and he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. Lu. ix. 1, 2. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by

any means hurt you. Lu. x. 19. For I will give you a mouth, and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay or resist. Lu. xxi. 15. Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high. Lu. xxiv. 49. John answered and said (to his disciples, who complained of Christ's baptizing, saying, Behold, the same baptizeth), A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from above. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John iii. 27. 35. Glorify thy Son, as thou hast given him (said Jesus to his Father) power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John xvii. 1, 2. Then said Jesus to "them" ("his disciples") again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained. John xx. 21, 22, 23. But ye shall receive power (said Jesus to his disciples) after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Ac. i. 8. And (ye, the Jews, said Peter) killed the Prince of life and glory, whom God hath raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses. And his name, through faith in his name, hath made this man (that was lame from his mother's womb) strong, whom ye see and know; yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Ac. iii. 15, 16. Jesus I know, and Paul I know (said the evil spirit), but who are ye? (the seven sons of Sceva.) Ac. xix. 15.

2 Apostles.] Of them (his disciples) he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles. Lu. vi. 13. And the apostles, when they were returned, told him (Jesus) all that they had done; and he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city, called Bethsaida. Lu. ix. 10. I will send them prophets and apostles (said the wisdom of God), and some of them they shall slay and persecute. Lu. xi. 49. And when the hour (for eating the passover) was come, he sat down, and the twelve Apostles with him. Lu. xxii. 14. And they (the disciples) gave forth their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles (in the room of Judas Iscariot). Ac. i. 26. And he (Jesus) gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists,

Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and 3 John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and

and some pastors and teachers. Ep. iv. 11. Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Jesus Christ, who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. He. iii. 1, 2. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy Apostles, and prophets, for God hath avenged you on "her" ("Babylon").

Re. xviii. 20.

Simon. See chap. iv. 18. and com. Simon Peter answered, and said (unto Jesus), Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered, and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but

my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Mat. xvi. 16, 17, 18. And when they (the disciples) were come in (from Mount Olivet), they went up into an upper room, where abode Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. Ac. i. 13. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. 1 Pe. i. 1. Andrew.] See chap. iv. 18. 21. and com. As he (Jesus) sat upon the Mount of Olives, over against the Temple, John and Andrew asked him privately (of the destruction of the temple). Mar. xiii. 3. Philip cometh and telleth Andrew (that certain Greeks would see Jesus), and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. John xii. 22.

James the son of Zebedee.] See chap. iv. 21. Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church: and he killed James the brother of John with the sword. Ac. xii. 1, 2. After that (Christ's being seen of five hundred) he was seen of James, then of all the apostles. 1 Co. xv. 7.

And John his brother.] And he (Jesus) sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. Lu. xxii. 8.

Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples whom Jesus loved. John xiii. 23. Then she (Mary Magdalene) runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. John xx. 2. Peter,

turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following, which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? This is the disciple (John) which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. John xxi. 20. 24. Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour (where they healed a lame man). Ac. iii. 1. That which we have seen and heard (said John) declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 1 John i. 3, 4. The elder (John) unto the elect lady, and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; for the truth's sake which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever, grace be with you, mercy and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 2 Jaim i. 1, 2, 3. The elder (John) unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. 3 John 1. The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John. I, John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. Re. i. 1. 9. 1, John, saw these things (the blessed state of God's servants), and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not. Re. xxii. 8, 9.

3 Philip.] See verse 2. chap. iv. 18. 21. and com. The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter: Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. John i. 43-46. Philip saith unto him (Jesus), Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with thee, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?
