of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to

principalities, and powers, in heavenly places, might be known, by the Church, the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ep. iii. 8-11. Be thou partaker of the afflictions of the Gospel according to the power of God, who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works; but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. 2 Ti. i. 9.

27 Are delivered unto me.] All power is given unto me in heaven and earth. Mat. xxviii. 18. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John iii. 35. As the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. I can of mine own self do nothing. As I hear I judge (said Jesus): and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. John v. 21-30. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God, he riseth from supper, and took a towel, and began to wash his disciples' feet, &c. John xiii. 3, &c. Thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John xvii. 2. He must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 1 Co. xv. 25. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death; for he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him. 1 Co. xv. 26, 27. I cease not to give thanks for you, that ye may know what is the exceeding greatness of his power (of the God of our Lord Jesus Christ) to us-ward, who believe according to the working of his mighty power; which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Ep. i. 19-23. God hath also exalted him, and

given him a name which is above every name; that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phi. ii. 9, 10, 11. Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him; but we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, that he, by the grace of God, should taste death for every man. For it became him for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. He. ii. 7-10. (Jesus) who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God: angels, and authorities, and powers being made subject unto him. 1 Pe. iii. 22.

No man knoweth the Son, but the Father.] No man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son; and he to whom the Son will reveal him. Lu. x. 22. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. John x. 15.

Neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son.] No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. John i. 18. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. John vi. 46. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. John x. 15. Jesus saith unto him (Thomas), I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me; if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also; and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father, and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father. John xiv. 6-9. As thou (the Father) hast given him (Jesus) power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me, and they have kept thy word. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee, and

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

28 whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

these bave known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it. That the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them and I in them. John xvii. 2, 3. 6. 25, 26. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father (but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also). 1 John ii. 23. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1 John v. 19, 20. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 2. John 9.

Come unto me.] Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else; I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return that unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Surely shall one say, In the Lord have I righteousness and strength, even to him shall men come, and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory. Is. xlv. 22-25. He (the Messiah) shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He hath no form or comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Is. liii. 2, 3. Ho! every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money, come ye, buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk without money, and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread ? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Is. lv. 1, 2. Incline your ear and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Is. lv. 3. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. John vi. 37. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink. John vii. 37. And the spirit and the bride say, Come; and let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let

him take the water of life freely. Re. xxii. 17.

All ye that labour.] "They" ("the Scribes and Pharisees") bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. Mat. xxiii. 4. Unto Adam he (God) said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it, cursed is the ground for thy sake. In sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth unto thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return unto the ground, for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Ge. iii. 17, 18, 19. Man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly upward. Job v. 7. Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. Job xiv. 1. Day and night thy hand was heavy upon me, my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. P. xxxii. 4. Mine iniquities are gone over mine head as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. Ps. xxxviii. 4. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. Ps. xc. 7. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath, we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow, for it is soon cut off and we fly away. Ps. xc. 8, 9, 10. All things are full of labour, man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Ec. i. 8. 14. For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief, yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night: this is also vanity. Ec. ii. 22. 23. There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother, yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither, saith he, For whom do I labour and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail. Ec. iv. 8. Ah! sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity; a seed of evil doers; children that are corrupters; they have forsaken the Lord; they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger; they are gone away backward. Is. i. 4. The Lord

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and 29

hath anointed me (Christ) to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called the Trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Is. Ixi. 3. To this man will I look (saith God), even to him that is poor, and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. Is. lxvi. 2. Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good: and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Mi. vi. 6, 7, 8. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke on the neck of the disciples (said Peter), which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? Ac. xv. 10. I delight in the law of God after the inward man, but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. Ro. vii. 22-25. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Ga. v. 1.

And I will give you rest.] See verse 29. Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law, that thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked. Ps. xciv. 12, 13. Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. Ps. cxvi. 7. In that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people, to it shall the Gentiles seek and his rest shall be glorious. Is. xi. 10. This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest. And this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. Is. xxviii. 12. Thus saith the Lord thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, I am the Lord thy God, which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea. Is. xlviii. 17, 18. Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is

the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls; but they said, We will not walk therein. Je. vi. 16. It is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. 2 The. i. 7. Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. He. iv. 1.

29 My yoke.] See chap. vii. 24. While he (Peter) yet spake (on the mount of transfiguration), behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him. Mat. xvii. 5. To them that are without law (I became, said Paul), as without law (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ), that I might gain them that are without law. 1 Co. ix. 21. Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Co. x. 5. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. 1 The. iv. 2. The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 The. i. 8. Being made perfect, he (Jesus) became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. He. v. 9.

And learn of me.] See verse 27. Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. Mat. xxviii. 19, 20. Why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: he is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock, and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded upon a rock. Lu. vi. 46. 48. Then they (the Gadarenes) went out to see, and came to Jesus, and found the man out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind, and they were afraid. Lu. viii. 35. And "she" ("Martha") had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word; but Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said

30 lowly in heart : and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and troubled about many things, but one thing is needful, and Mary hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her. Lu. x. 39-42. I have given you an example (in washing his disciples' feet) that ye should do as I have done to you (said Jesus). John xiii. 15. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me, him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. Ac. iii. 22, 23. This is that Moses which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. Ac. vii. 37. But ye have not so learned Christ, if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus. Ep. iv. 20, 21. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. Phi. ii. 5. He that saith, He abideth in him, ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 1 John ii. 6. See chap. xx. 25.

For I am meek and lowly of heart.] He shall not strive nor cry, neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets, a bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. Mat. xii. 19, 20. Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. Mat. xxi. 5. Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. Nu. xii. 3. Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Ps. cxxxi. 1. Behold, my servant whom I uphold, mine elect in whom my soul delighteth, I have put my Spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles, he shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street: a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench; he shall bring forth judgment unto truth, he shall not fail, nor be discouraged till he have set judgment in the earth, and the isles shall wait for his law. Is. xlii. 1-4. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, thy King cometh unto thee. He is just, and having salvation, lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. Ze. ix. 9. It came to pass when the time was come that he (Jesus) should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jeru salem. And sent messengers before his face,

and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of, for the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. Lu. ix. 51-56. Now I Paul myself beseech you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you. 2 Co. x. 1. (Christ) made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Phi. ii. 7, 8. For even here. unto (to suffer patiently) were ye called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that ye should follow his steps, who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth : who, when he was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. 1 Pe. ii. 21-23.

And ye shall find rest unto your souls.] See verse 28. We which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise. And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again. If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein; and they to whom it (the gospel) was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. He. iv. 3–6.11.

30 My yoke is easy.] Her (wisdom's) ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Pr. iii. 17. What doth the Lord God require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God! Mi. vi. 8. Why tempt ye God (said Peter) to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples? For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon "you" ("the churches") no greater burden than these necessary things, &c. Ac. xv. 10. 28. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage; for, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty: but if ye be led by the

Spirit, ye are not under the law. Ga. v. 1. 18. This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John v. 3.

Burden is light.] In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33. Blessed be God, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 2 Co. i. 4, 5. For our light affliction which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. 2 Co. iv. 17. My grace is sufficient for thee, for my strength is made perfect in weakness; most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then am I strong. 2 Co. xii. 9, 10. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Phi. iv. 13.

CHAP. XII.-1 Went on the sabbath-day.] And it came to pass, that he went through the corn-fields on the sabbath-day, and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbathday that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did when he had need, and was an hungred, he and they that were with him? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shew-bread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath, therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Mar. ii. 23, 24-28. And it came to pass, on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the cornfields, and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath-days? And Jesus answering them, said, Have ye not read so much as this? What David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; how

he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shew-bread, and gave also to them that were with him, which it is not lawful to eat, but for the priests alone? And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Lu. vi. 1—5.

To pluck the ears of corn.] When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand, but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn. De. xxiii. 25.

2 Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful.] See verse 10. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man servant, nor thy maid servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day, wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day, and hallowed it. Ex. xx. 9-11. Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, &c. Ex. xxiii. 12. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord, whosoever doeth any work in the sab→ bath-day, he shall surely be put to death. It (the sabbath) is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. Ex. xxxi. 15. 17. Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord, whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death. Ex. xxxv. 2. And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath-day. And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. And the Lord said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death, all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp; and all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses. Nu xv. 32-36. If thou turn away thy foot from
