devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they 5 had not much earth and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were 6 scorched and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and 7 choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth 8 fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

and some an hundred. Mar. iv. 3-8. A sower went out to sow his seed, and as he sowed, some fell by the way-side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground; and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundred-fold. Lu. viii. 5-8.

5 Stony places.] See verse 20. I will give them" ("the remnant of Israel") one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh. Ez xi. 19. A new heart also will I give you; and a new spirit will I put within you. And I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Ez. xxxvi. 26. Shall horses run upon the rock? Will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock. Am. vi. 12. Yea, "they" ("the Jews") made their hearts as an adamant-stone, lest they should hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his Spirit by the former prophets; therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts. Zec. vii. 12.

6 When the sun was up.] See verse 21. They (the Gentiles), shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. Is. xlix. 10. The sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 1 Ja. i. 11, 12. "They" ("which came out of great tribulation") shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. Re. vii. 16.

Because they had no root.] See chap. vii. 26, 27. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy. And these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. L. viii. 13. For this cause I bow my knees

unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend, with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Ep. iii. 14. 17, 18, 19. If ye continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the Gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven. Col. i. 23. As ye have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him; rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Col. ii. 6, 7.

7 Among thorns.] See verse 22. Thorns also and thistles shall it (the ground) bring forth to thee (said God to Adam). Ge. iii. 18. Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn, that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. Je. iv. 3, 4. These are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches; and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Mar. iv. 18, 19. That on

8 Good ground.] See verse 23. the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. Lu. viii. 15. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing (said Paul), for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. Ro. vii. 18.

Some an hundredfold.] Then Isaac sowed in that land (of Abimelech), and received in the same year an hundredfold. Ge. xxvi. 12. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit. John xv. 8. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Ga. v. 22, 23. And this I pray, that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ, being filled with all the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. Ph. i. 9, 10, 11. See chap. xiii. 23.

9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. And the disciples came, 10 and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is

9 Hath ears to hear.] See verse 16. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Mat. xi. 15. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Mar. iv. 9. 23. Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand. There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Mar. vii. 14, 15, 16. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. Re. ii. 7. 11. 17. 29.; iii. 6. 13. 22. All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear. part, which shall not be taken away from her. Lu. x. 39-42. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. Joka vii. 17. And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us; whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. Ac. xvi. 14. "These" ("the Bereans") were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily whether those things were so; therefore many of them believed. Ac. xvii. 11, 12. As it is written (said Paul), Eye hath not seen, not ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him; but God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit; for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. But the natural man receiveth not the things of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Co. ii. 9, 10. 14. Now if thou didst receive it, Lord, therefore will he teach sinners in the why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not way the meek will he guide in judgment; received it? 1 Co. iv. 7. If any of you lack and the meek will he teach his way: the wisdom, let him ask of God that giveth to all secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall and he will shew them his covenant. And she (Martha the sister of Lazarus) had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word; but Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her, therefore, that she help me. And Jesus answered, and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things; but one thing is needful, and Mary hath chosen that good

10 Why speakest thou unto them, &c.] And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve, asked of him the parable (of the sower). And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it; but without a parable spake he not unto them. And when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples. Mar. iv. 10. 33, 34.

The mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.] Now to him (said Paul) that is of power to stablish you, according to my Gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ (according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret since the world began; but now is made manifest, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations, for the obe dience of faith), to God, only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. which God ordained before the world unto our glory. 1 Co. ii. 7. Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 1 Co. iv. 1. Though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 1 Co. xiii. 2. Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump. 1 Co. xv. 51, 52. He (the Lord) hath abounded toward us in all wisdom, and prudence, Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself. Wherefore I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, ye may know what is the hope of his (Christ's) calling, and what the riches of the glory of bis inheritance in the saints. Ep. i. 8, 9. 18. Ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God, which is given me to you-ward. How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery, as I wrote afore in a few words, whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ, which in other ages, was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit, that the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the Gospel, whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God, given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. And to make all men see what is the fellow ship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. Ep. iii. 2-9. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and his church. Ep. v. 32. (Pray) for me (said Paul) that utterance may be given unto me; that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the Gospel. Ep. vi. 19. I am made a minister to fulfil the word of God, even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations; but now is made manifest to his saints; to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Col. i. 26, 27. I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; that their

hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ. Col. ii. 1, 2. Likewise must the deacons be grave, holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience; and without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Ti. iii. 8, 9. 16.

12 Whosoever hath, &c.] Unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. Mat. xxv. 29. And he saith unto them, Take heed what ye hear; for with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you. And unto you that hear shall more be given; for he that hath, to him shall be given; and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath. Mar. iv. 24, 25. Take heed therefore how ye hear; for whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. Lu. viii. 18. For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. Lu. ix. 26. Take from him the pound (said the nobleman in the parable, who left money with his servants to trade with), and give it to him that hath ten pounds; (and they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds;) for I say unto you, that unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. xix. 24, 25, 26. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit "he" (" the Father") taketh away (said Jesus); and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean, through the word which I have spoken unto you; abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing. John xv. 2-5.

From him shall be taken, &c.] I say unto "you" ("the Jews"), The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Mat. xxi. 43. I will tell you what I will do with my vineyard; I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden

them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they 14 hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and

down; and I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it; for the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant; and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry. Is. v. 5, 6, 7. What shall, therefore, the Lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. Mar. xii. 9. One thing is needful, and Mary (said Jesus) hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her. Lu. x. 42. Thou fool (said God to the rich man who boasted himself in his multiplied stores), this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Lu. xii. 20, 21. How is it that I hear this of thee (said the rich man to the unjust steward)? Give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward! Abraham said (to the rich man, being in torments), Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Lu. xvi. 2. 25. Remember from whence "thou" (" the angel of the church of Ephesus") art fallen, and repent, and do the first works, or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. Re. ii. 5. I know thy works (was the message of John to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans), that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot: so then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth. Re. iii. 15, 16. 13 Because they seeing see not.] See verse 16. And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen the great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs and those great miracles; yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. De. xxix. 2, 3, 4. Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf as my messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lord's servant? seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not. Is. xlii. 18, 19, 20. They have not known nor understood; for he (the Lord) hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see, and their hearts, that they cannot understand. Is. xliv. 18. Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes

and see not, which have ears, and hear not. Je. v. 21. Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not; for they are a rebellious house. Ez. xii. 2. And when Jesus knew it (that they reasoned among themselves, saying, He bids us beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, because we have no bread), he saith unto them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand? Have ye your heart yet hardened; having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? And do ye not remember (Christ's miraculously feeding four thousand). Mar. viii. 17, 18. This is the condemnation (said Jesus), that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. John iii. 19, 20. For judgment I am come into this world; that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. John ix. 39. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. John ix. 40, 41. If our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Co. iv. 3, 4.

14 The prophecy of Esaias.] See preced. com. Go and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not; make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Is. vi. 9, 10. See chap. xiii. 11. Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. John xii. 39, 40. And when "they” (“ wko heard Paul expounding and testifying the kingdom of God") agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet, unto our fathers, saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing, ye shall hear, and not understand; and seeing, ye shall see, and not perceive: for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears

shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears 15 are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: 16

are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed, lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Ac. xxviii. 25, 26, 27. According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber; eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear. Ro. xi. 8. And David saith, Let their table be made a snare and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompence unto them; let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. Ro. xi. 9, 10. But their minds were blinded; for until this day remaineth the same vail (as that which Moses put over his face) untaken away, in the reading of the Old Testament, which vail is done away in Christ. 2 Co. iii. 14.

15 Heart is waxed gross.] Their heart is as fat as grease. Ps. cxix. 70.

Ears are dull of hearing.] "They" ("the hypocritical Jews") refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears that they should not hear. Zec. vii. 11. Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. John viii. 43. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do; he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him: when he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar and the father of it. John viii. 44. Then (when Stephen said, that he saw the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God) they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord. Ac. vii. 57. The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Ti. iv. 3, 4. Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered. Called of God an high priest, after the order of Melchisedec; of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. He. v. 8. 10, 11.

Their eyes they have closed.] The Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers, hath he covered. And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men

deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed. And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I am not learned. Is. xxix. 10, 11, 12. He (the idol-maker) feedeth on ashes; a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand? Isa. xliv. 20. Then shall the Wicked be revealed whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power, and signs, and lying wonders; and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness, in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie. 2 Th. ii. 8-11.

And should be converted.] Repent ye (said Peter to the Jews) and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Ac. iii. 19. The servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves: if God, peradventure, will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 2 Ti. ii. 24, 25, 26. It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost; and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come; if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance, seeing they crucify the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. He. vi. 4, 5, 6.

And I should heal them.] I have seen his (the penitent's) ways, and will heal him; I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him, and to his mourners. Is. lvii. 18. Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee, for thou art the Lord our God. Je. iii. 22. Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. Je. xvii. 14. Behold, I will bring "it" (the "captivity" of Judah and of Israel) health and cure; and I will cure them, and I will reveal unto them the abundance of peace
