But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon he wept. Mar. xiv. 38. 66-72. Then took they "him" ("Jesus"), and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house; and Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were sat down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him, as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not! And after a little while, another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them; and Peter said, Man, I am not ! And about the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth, this fellow also was with him; for he is a Galilean And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest; and immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out and wept bitterly. Lu. xxii. 54-62. And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself (in the palace of the high priest, Caiaphas), they said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not! One of the servants of the high priest (being his kinsman, whose ear Peter cut off,) saith, Did I not see thee in the garden with him? Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crew. John xviii. 25, 26, 27. At my first answer (in Paul's contest with Alexander the coppersmith), no man stood with me (said Paul), but all men forsook me; I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me, that by me the preaching might be fully known; and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 2 Ti. iv. 16, 17.

Lord, save me.] See chap. viii. 24, 25, Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God; for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheekbone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Ps. iii. 7. Save me, O God, for the waters are come in unto my soul; I sink in

deep mire, where there is no standing; I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. Ps. lxix. 1, 2. Then they (who go down to the sea in ships) cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses: he maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. Ps. cvii. 28-30. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Ps. cxvi. 3, 4. Waters flowed over mine head. Then I said, I am cut off. I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon. Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee; thou saidst, Fear not. La. iii. 54-57. I cried (said Jonah) by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me. Out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice: for thou hadst cast me into the deep in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about. All thy billows and thy waves passed over me: then I said, I am cast out of thy sight, yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about; the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains: the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption. O Lord my God, when my soul fainted within me, remembered the Lord, and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. Jon. ii. 2-7. Lest I should be exalted above measure (said Paul) through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake, for when I am weak, then am I strong. 2 Co. xii. 7-10.

31 Stretched forth his hand.] Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. Ps. cxxxviii. 7. Where is He that led "them" ("Israel") by the

And now, Lord (said the apostles, being let go by the council), behold their threatenings; and grant unto thy servants that with all boldness they may speak thy word; by stretching forth thine hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus! Ac. iv. 29, 30.

And caught him.] Abraham lifted up his eyes (when about to sacrifice his son Isaac) and looked, and, behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh. As it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen. Ge. xxii. 13, 14. The Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants; when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. De. xxxii. 36. Go your way (said the angel to the women at the sepulchre); tell his disciples and Peter, that he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. Mar. xvi. 7. Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not, and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Lu. xxii. 31, 32. The Lord is risen indeed (said the two disciples, on the way to Emmaus), and hath appeared to Simon. Lu. xxiv. 34. An inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away (is) reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pe. i. 4, 5.

O thou of little faith.] See chap. vi. 30; viii. 26. Why could not we cast him out (the evil spirit from the lunatic)? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief. Mat. xvii. 19, 20. Afterwards he (Jesus) appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief, and hardness of heart, because they believed not

them which had seen him after he was risen. Mar. xvi. 14. O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken (said Jesus to his disciples after his resurrection). Lu. xxiv. 25. See chap. xv. 28.

Doubt.] If ye have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also, if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea, it shall be done. Mat. xxi. 21. And when "they" ("the eleven") saw him (in the mountain of Galilee), they worshipped him, but some doubted. Mat. xxviii. 17. Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith. Mar. xi. 23. (Abraham, who is the father of us all) who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be; and being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb; he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. Ro. iv. 18-20. I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath or doubting. 1 Ti. ii. 8. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed; for let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord! A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. Ja. i. 6-8.

32 Come into the ship.] He (the Lord) maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them to their desired haven. Ps. cvii. 29, 30. What manner of man is this (said they that were in the ship), that even the wind and the sea obey him? Mar. iv. 41. And he went up unto them into the ship (after walking upon the sea), and the wind ceased; and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. Mar. vi. 51. They willingly received him into the ship, and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went. John vi. 21.

33 Worshipped him.] See Mat. ii. 2-11. Then came she (the woman of Canaan) and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. Mat. xv. 25. And as they (the women) went to tell his disciples (of Jesus' resurrection), behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail! And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. And when they (the eleven

34 him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. And when they

afterwards) saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. Mat. xxviii. 9. 17. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. Lu. xxiv. 51, 52.

Of a truth thou art the Son of God.] See chap. xxvi. 63. Whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Mat. xvi. 16. While he (Peter) yet spake (in the mount of transfiguration), behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. Mat. xvii. 5. I adjure thee by the living God (said the high priest to Jesus), that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God? Mat. xxvi. 63. He trusted in God (said the high priests), let him deliver him now if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done (at Christ's crucifixion), they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. Mat. xxvii. 43. 54. I will declare the decree; the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Ps. ii. 7. He (Nebuchadnezzar) answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose in the midst of the fire (of the furnace), and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. Da. iii. 25. The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mar. i. 1. The high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am. Mar. xiv. 61, 62. Truly this was the Son of God (said the centurion). Mar. xv. 39. That holy thing which shall be born of thee (said the angel to Mary) shall be called the Son of God. Lu. i. 35. Devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ, the Son of God. Lu. iv. 41. When he (that had the legion) saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most High? Lu. viii. 28. No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son which is in the bosom of the Father he hath declared him. Rabbi, thou art the Son of God (said Nathanael to Jesus), thou art the King of Israel. John i. 18. 49. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John iii. 16. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 17. 23.

We believe, and are sure (said Simon Peter) that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. John vi. 69. Jesus heard that they (the Jews) had cast him out (the man that was born blind, and healed by him); and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he who talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. John ix. 35-38. She (Martha) said unto him, Yea, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John xi. 27. And (Jesus) lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come, glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee. John xvii. 1. We have a law (said the Jews), and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. John xix. 7. These (the words of this book) are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. John xx. 31. I believe (said the Ethiopian eunuch to Philip) that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Ac. viii. 37. Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the Gospel of God, concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David, according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Ro. i. 1-4. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. Ro. viii. 3. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. He. i. 1, 2. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John iv. 10. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not, God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 1 John v. 10.

34 When they were gone over, &c.] When they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, and ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment; and as many as

when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out
into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that
were diseased; And besought him that they might only touch the 36

CHAPTER XV.

THEN came to Jesus Scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jeru- 1

The land of Gennesaret.] It came to pass, that as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret. Lu. v. 1.

35 They sent out into all that country.] See chap. iv. 23, 24, 25, and com. And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door, and he preached the word unto them. Mar. ii. 1, 2, &c. And a great multitude from Galilee followed him; and from Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did came unto him. And he spake to his disciples that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him, for he had healed many, insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues. Mar. iii. 7-10. They (the people) knew him (Jesus, as he came out of a ship to the shore of Gennesaret), and ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. Mar. vi. 54, 55.

36 Only touch, &c.] See chap. ix. 20, 21. He had healed many, insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues. Mar. iii. 10. And the whole multitude sought to touch him, for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. Lu. vi. 19.

Hem of his garment.] See chap. ix. 20. Beneath, upon the hem of "it" ("the robe of the Ephod") thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; the bells of gold between them round about, &c. Ex. xxviii. 33,

&c.

Perfectly whole.] All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. John vi. 37. If a man on the sabbath-day (said Jesus) receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken, are ye angry at me because I have made a man every whit

His name, through faith in his name, hath made this man strong (said Peter, concerning the lame man), whom ye see and know; yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness, in the presence of you all. Ac. iii. 16. If we this day be examined (said Peter) of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole, be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. But when they commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, saying, What shall we do to these men? For that indeed a notable miracle has been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. Ac. iv. 9, 10. 14, 15, 16.

CHAP. XV.-1 Came to Jesus.] Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the Scribes which came from Jerusalem; and when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled (that is to say, with unwashen) hands, they found fault. Mar. vii. 1, 2, &c.

Scribes and Pharisees.] See chap. v. 20. Their Scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? Lu. v. 30. And there arose a great cry (respecting Paul). And the Scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man; but if a spirit or an angel have spoken to him, let us not fight against God. Ac. xxiii. 9.

But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the 4 commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother; and, He that curseth father 5 or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall

blasphemies who can forgive sins but God alone? Lu. v. 17. 21.

2 Transgress the tradition.] The Pharisees and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders and when they come from the market, except they wash they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups and pots, brazen vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and Scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? Mar. vii. 3, 4, 5. I persecuted the Church of God (said Paul), and wasted it; and profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. Ga. i. 14. Beware, lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men. If ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why as though living in the world are ye subject to ordinances (touch not, taste not, handle not, which all are to perish with the using) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things indeed have a shew of wisdom in will-worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. Col. ii. 8. 20-23. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers. 1 Pe. i. 18.

3 Why do ye also transgress, &c.] See chap. vii. 3-5, and verse 2. Well hath Esaias prophesied of you, hypocrites (said Jesus to the Pharisees and Scribes), as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men; for, laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups, and many other such like things ye do: making the word of God of none effect through your tradition which ye have delivered. Mar. vii. 6, 7, 8. 13. Rebuke "them" ("the Cretians") sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Tit. i. 13, 14. 4 God commanded, &c.] See chap. iv. 10; v. 17-19. Should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To

the law and to the testimony: if they (a people) speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Is. viii. 19, 20. Do we make void the law, through faith? God forbid yea, we establish the law. Ro. iii. 31.

Honour thy father and mother.] Honour thy father and thy mother (said Jesus to the young man who had great possessions). Mat. xix. 19. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Er. xx. 12.

Ye shall fear every man his mother and his father. Le. xix. 3. Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. De. v. 16. Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. Pr. xxiii. 22. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right; honour thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise). Ep. vi. 1, 2.

He that curseth father or mother, &c.] He that curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. Ex. xxi. 17. Every one that curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother, his blood shall be upon him. Le. xx. 9. If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that when they have chastened him will not hearken unto them, then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die. De. xxi. 18-21. Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. De. xxvii. 16. Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. Pr. xx. 20. The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. Pr. XXX, 17. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Ep. vi. 1.

5 Ye say, &c.] Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor ! Ye fools, and blind! for whether is
