beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees 13 and of the Sadducees. When Jesus came into the coasts of Cesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men 14 say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or 15 one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that 16 I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ,

12 But of the doctrine, &c.] See chap. xv. 4-9. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer. Ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves, &c. &c. Mat. xxiii. 13, 14, 15. &c. The Sadducees say, There is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both. Ac. xxiii. 8.

13 Came into the coasts, &c.] See chap. xv. 21. God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.

Ac. x. 38.

Cesarea Philippi.] Jesus went out and his disciples into the towns of Cesarea Philippi, and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? &c. Mar. viii. 27.

Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?] As he was alone praying, his disciples were with him; and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? Lu. ix. 18. I the Son of man am ?] See chap. viii. 20.; ix. 6.; xii. 8. 32. 40.; xiii. 37. 41. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. Mat. xxv. 31. I saw in the night visions; and behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. Dan. vii. 13. Whosoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be

ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels. Mar. viii. 38. Even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mar. x. 45. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. i. 51. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up. John iii. 14. And (the Father) hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

John v.

We have heard out of the law that

Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? John xii. 34. Behold, I see the heavens opened (said Stephen), and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Ac. vii. 56. Forasmuch as the chil dren are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil; and deliver them, who, through fear of death, were all their life-time subject to bondage; for verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore, in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. He. ii. 14—18.

14 John the Baptist.] See chap. xiv. 2.

Elias.] Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Mal. iv. 5. Others said (of Christ), That it is Elias; and others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. Mar. vi. 15. Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say Elias. Lu. ix. 18, 19. And there was much murmuring among people concerning him; for some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people. John vii. 12. Many of the people, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth, this is the prophet; others said, This is the Christ; but some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? John vii. 40, 41.

They" (" the Pharisees") say unto the blind man (that was healed), What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. John ix. 17.

15 But whom say ye, &c.] See chap. xiii.

11. Whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. Mar. viii. 29. Whom say ye that am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. Lu. ix. 20.

16 Thou art the Christ.] See chap. xiv. 33. And straightway he (Paul) preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. Ac. ix. 20. God hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he

the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto 17 him, Blessed art thou, Simon-Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son. He. i. 2-5. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 1 John iv. 15. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true; and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1 John v. 5. 20.; xxvi. 63.

17 Blessed art thou.] See chap. v. 3-11.; xiii. 16, 17. And he (Jesus) turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see; for I tell you, That many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. Lu. x. 23, 24. I have prayed for thee (said the Lord to Simon), that thy faith fail not, and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Lu. xxii. 32. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which, according to his abundant mercy, hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation. 1 Pe. i. 3, 4, 5. The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed, Feed the flock of God. 1 Pe. v. 1, 2.

For flesh and blood, &c.] I certify you, brethren, that the Gospel which was preached of me is not after man; for I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. It pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood. Ga. i. 11, 12. 15, 16.

But my Father which is in heaven.] See chap. xi. 25, 26, 27. All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the

peace of thy children. Is. liv. 13. I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth (said Jesus) that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me of my Father, and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father, and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. Lu. x. 21, 22. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me. John vi. 45. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world. Thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee; for I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. John xvii. 6, 7, 8. As it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit; for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God. That we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Co. ii. 9-12. When it pleased God to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen, immediately I conferred. not with flesh and blood. Ga. i. 16. I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. Ep. i. 17, 18. By grace are ye saved through faith; and that, not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Ep. ii. 8. When ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ, which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, that ye, being rooted and grounded

in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Ep. iii. 4, 5. 14. 17, 18. 19. Whereof (the church) I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints. To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Col. i. 25, 26, 27. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 1 John iv. 15. We know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1 John v. 20.

18 Thou art Peter.] See chap. iv. 18.; x. 2. When Jesus beheld him (Simon), he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is, by interpretation, A stone. John i. 42. When James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Ga. ii. 9.

Upon this rock, &c.] Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, a sure foundation. He that believeth shall not make haste. Is. xxviii. 16. According to the grace of God which is given me (Paul), as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon; but let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Co. iii. 10, 11. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone. In whom all the building fitly framed together, groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord; in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God, through the Spirit. Ep. ii. 19-22. And the wall of the city (the new Jerusalem) had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Re. xxi. 14.

I will build. &c.] Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is the Branch, and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the

Lord.

Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne; and the counsel of Peace shall be between them both. Zec. vi. 12, 13. For we are labourers together with God; ye are God's husbandry; ye are God's building. 1 Co. iii. 9. This man (Jesus) was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house; for every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. He. iii. 3, 4.

My church.] If he (the brother who trespasseth against thee) shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church; but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee us an heathen man and a publican. Mat. xviii. 17. The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Ac. ii. 47. At that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem. Ac. viii. 1. Unto me (Paul) is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles, to the intent, that now unto the princi palities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God. Ep. iii. 10. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word; that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Ep. v. 25, 26, 27. 32. He (Christ) is the head of the body the church: who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in all things he might have the pre-eminence. Col. i. 18. If a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? These things (respecting the qualifications of bishops and deacons) I write unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly. But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1 Ti. iii. 5. 14, 15.

And the gates of hell.] In blessing I will bless thee (said the Lord to Abraham), and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore: and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies. Ge. xxii. 17. The king (David) said unto them (who said, Then shalt not go forth to the battle), What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands. 2 Sa. xvi. 4.

against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of 19

Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? (said the Lord to Job.) Job xxxviii. 17. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death. Ps. ix. 13. They that sit in the gate speak against me. Ps. lxix. 12. Their soul (the soul of fools) abhorreth all manner of meat, and they draw near unto the gates of death. Ps. evii. 18. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of "them" ("children"), they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Ps. cxxvii. 5. Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate. Pr. xxiv. 7. In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate. Is. xxviii. 6. In the cutting off of my days (said Hezekiah) I shall go to the gates of the grave. Is. xxxviii. 10. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 1 Co. xv. 55.

Shall not prevail against it.] They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people, from henceforth even for ever. Ps. cxxv. 1, 2. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. Is. liv. 17. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and none is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. John x. 27-30. Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter). Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come; nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ro. viii. 33-39. We receiving a kingdom which

cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and godly fear; for our God is a consuming fire. He. xii. 28, 29. There were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. Re. xi. 15. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away, and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men; and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people; and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away. Re. xxi. 1—4.

19 Give unto thee.] Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words; this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days (saith God), I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams, Ac. ii. 14. 17. Of a truth I perceive (said Peter) that God is no respecter of persons; but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him, &c.

&c.

Ac. x. 34, 35, &c. Men and brethren (said Peter), ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the Gospel, and believe. Ac. xv. 7.

The keys of the kingdom of heaven.] And the key of the house of David will lay upon his (Eliakim's) shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut and none shall open. 18. xxii. 22. I am he that liveth and was dead, and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen, and have the keys of hell and of death. Re. i. 18. These things saith he that is Holy (to the church in Philadelphia), he that is true, he that hath the key of David; he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth. Re. iii. 7. I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth, and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. Re. ix. 1. And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, and a great chain in his hand; and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should

heaven and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be 20 loosed in heaven. Then charged he his disciples that they should 21 tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto

deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled; and after that he must be loosed a little season. Re. xx. 1-3. And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth, &c.] Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven (said Jesus to all his disciples), and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Mat. xviii. 18. Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained. John xx. 23. I verily, as absent in body (said Paul), but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him (the incestuous person) that hath done this deed. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, to deliver such an one unto Satan, for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Co. v. 3, 4, 5. To whom ye forgive any thing (said Paul to the Corinthians) I forgive also; for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes, forgave I it in the person of Christ. 2 Co. ii. 10. He that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. 1 Th. iv. 8. These (the two witnesses) have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the day of their prophecy; and have power over waters, to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Re. xi. 6.

20 Charged he his disciples.] See chap. viii. 4; xvii. 9. And he charged them (his disciples) that they should tell no man of him. Mar. viii. 30. And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. Mar. ix. 9. And he straitly charged them and commanded them to tell no man that thing (that he was the Christ of God). Lu. ix. 21. And when the voice (on the mount of transfiguration) was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. Lu. ix. 36.

Jesus the Christ.] We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, The Christ. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. John i. 41. 45. These (signs which Jesus did) are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name. John xx. 31.

Let all the house of Israel know assuredly (said Peter), that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Ac. ii. 36. Who is a liar, but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son. 1 John ii. 22. Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and every one that loveth him that begat, loveth him also that is begotten of him. 1 Joka v. 1.

21 Began Jesus to shew unto, &c.] While they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them (his disciples), The Son of man shall be be trayed into the hands of men: and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. Mat. xvii. 22, 23. Behold, we go up to Jerusalem (said Jesus), and the Son of mas shall be betrayed unto the chief priests, and unto the Scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles, to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him. And the third day he shall rise again. The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mat. xx. 18, 19. 28. Ye know that after two days (said Jesus) is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. Mat. xxvi. 1. And he (Jesus) began to teach “them” (“ kis disciples"), that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests and Scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mar. viii. 31. He taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him. Mar, ix. 31, 32. He took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem ; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the Scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles, and they shail mock him, and shall scourge him, and shail spit upon him, and shall kill him. And the third day he shall rise again. Mar. x. 32, 33, 34. The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and chief priests, and Scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. And behold, there talked with "him" ("Jesus," in the mountain of transfiguration) two men, which were Moses and Elias, who appeared in glory, and spake
