right, that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of 8 the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when 9 they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that 10 they should have received more; and they likewise received every

good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord; whether he be bond or free. Ep. vi. 8. God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. He. vi. 10.

8 When even was come.] See chap. xiii. 39, 40. And after a long time, the Lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. Mat. xxv. 19. 31. To them who by patient continuance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour and immortality (will God render) eternal life; but unto them who are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; but glory, honour, and peace to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile. Ro. ii. 6-10. For we must all appear before the judgmentseat of Christ, that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 2 Co. v. 10. So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. He. ix. 28. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God, and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works. Re. xx. 11, 12.

Unto his steward.] And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless; and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus ? Ge. xv. 2. And Joseph found grace in his (Potiphar's) sight. And he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he knew not ought he had save the bread which he did

eat. Ge. xxxix. 4, 5, 6. And they (Joseph's brethren) came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house. Ge. xliii. 19. The labourer is worthy of his hire. Lu. x. 7. And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward whom his lord shall make ruler over his household to give them their portion of meat in due season? Lu. xii. 42. There was a certain rich man (said Jesus in a parable) which had a steward, and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship, for thou mayest be no longer steward. Lu. xvi. 1, 2. Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful. 1 Co. iv. 1, 2. A bishop must be blameless as the steward of God. Tit. i. 7. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Pe. iv. 10.

9 They received every man a penny.] See verse 2. 6, 7. Dost not thou fear God (said the penitent thief to the other malefactor), seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds, but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Lu. xxiii. 40—43. What saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt: but to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works. Ro. iv. 3-6. The law entered, that the offence might abound: but where sin abounded, grace did much more abound; that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro. v. 20, 21. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings, having predestinated us unto the adoption of children, by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of

11 man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured 12 against the goodman of the house, Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, 13 which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he

his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence. Ep. i. 3. 5-8. By grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained, that we should walk in them. Ep. ii. 8, 9, 10. The grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Ti. i. 14, 15, 16.

11 They murmured, &c.] Their Scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? Lu. v. 30. And the Pharisees and Scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he (the elder brother of the prodigal) was angry (that the fatted calf was killed), and would not go in; therefore came his father out and entreated him. And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment, and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends; but as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. Lu. xv. 2. 28, 29, 30. And when they (the Jews) saw it (that Zaccheus the publican received Jesus joyfully), they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. Lu. xix. 7. When Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. Ac. xi. 2, 3.

When the Jews saw the multitudes (that came to hear Paul and Barnabas), they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Ac. xiii. 45. And he (Jesus) said unto me (Paul), Depart, for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. And " "they" ("the Jews") gave him (Paul) audience unto this word; and then lifted up their voices and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live. Ac. xxii. 21, 22. They (the Jews) please not God, and are contrary to all men; forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins

alway, for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 The. ii. 16. "These" ("the false teachers") are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts, and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration, because of advantage. Jude 16.

12 Equal unto us.] When thou art bidden (to a wedding), go and sit down in the lowest room, that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Lu. xiv. 10, 11. Now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Seeing it is one God which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. Ro. iii. 21-24. 30. It is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit, that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the Gospel. Ep. iii. 6.

Borne the burden and heat of the day.) They (the house of Jacob) seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God. They ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your inbours. Is. lviii. 2, 3. Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years? Then came the word of the Lord of hosts unto me, saying, Speak unto the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? Zec. vii. 3-5. Ye (of Israel) said also, Behold what a weariness is it; and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame and the sick; thus ye brought an offering. Should I accept this of your hand! saith the Lord. Mal. i. 13. Ye have said, It is vain to serve God, and what profit is it that we

answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, 14

have kept his ordinances, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? Mal. iii. 14. These many years (said the elder brother, in the parable, to his father) do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment, and yet thou never gavest to me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends; but as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. Lu. xv. 29, 30. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican; I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess. Lu. xviii. 11, 12, Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? Nay, but by the law of faith. Ro. iii. 27. What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith? But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law; for they stumbled at that stumbling-block. Ro. ix. 30, 31, 32. Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved; for I bear them record, that they have a zeal of 'God, but not according to knowledge; for they, being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God. Ro. x. 1, 2, 3. Even so then at this present time also, there is a remnant according to the election of grace; and if by grace, then is it no more of works. Otherwise grace is no more grace; but if it be of works, then is it no more grace; otherwise work is no more work. Ro. xi. 5, 6, Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place. 1 Co. iv. 11. Are they ministers of Christ (said Paul of those whom they patiently submitted to)? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedVOL. Besides those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 2 Co. xi. 23–28.

13 Friend.] Friend, how camest thou in hither (said the king in the marriage feast), not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Mat. xxii. 12. And Jesus said unto "him" ("Judas" that betrayed him), Friend, wherefore art thou come? Mat. xxvi. 50. See chap. xxvi. 50.

I do thee no wrong.] That be far from thee (said Abraham to God) to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked; and that the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? Ge. xviii. 25. What man (said Elihu) is like Job? which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men; for he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding; far be it from God that he should do wickedness, and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity; for the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways; yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment; shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? Job xxxiv. 7-12. 17, 18. Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righte ousness is more than God's? Job xxxv. 2. Wilt thou also disannul my judgment?. Wilt thou condemn me (saith God) that thou mayest be righteous? Job xl. 8. What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Nay, but O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Ro. ix. 14, 15. 20.

14 Thine is.] See chap. vi. 2. 6. 16. Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord (said Jehu). And the Lord said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel, with all his heart; for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam which made Israel to sin. 2 Ki. x. 16. 30, 31. Son of man (said the word of the Lord to Ezekiel), Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, caused his army to serve a great service

against Tyrus: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was peeled; yet had he no wages, nor his army, for Tyrus, for the service that he had served against it? Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army. I have given him the land of Egypt for his labour wherewith he served against it, because they wrought for me, saith the Lord God. Ex. xxix. 18-20. Son, thou art ever with me (said the father of the prodigal to his elder son), and all that I have is thine. Lu. xv. 31. Son, remember (said Abraham to the rich man being in torments) that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Lu. xvi. 25. Let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged; now as we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Ro. iii. 4. 19.

I will give unto this last, &c.] Father, glorify thy Son (said Jesus), that thy Son also may glorify thee. As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John xvii. 1, 2.

15 Is it not lawful for me, &c.] See chap. xi. 25. I will make all my goodness to pass before thee (said God to Moses), and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious; and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. Ex. xxxiii. 19. Thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God; the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people to himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The Lord did not set his love upon you because ye were more in number than any people (for ye were the fewest of all people), but because the Lord loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. De. vii. 6, 7, 8. Howbeit (said David), the Lord God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father, to be king over Israel for ever. For he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah the house of my father, and among the sons of my father he liked me, to make me king over all Israel; and of all my sons

(for the Lord hath given me many sons) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. 1 Ch. xxviii. 4, 5. If ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour; if ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt; then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. Je. vii. 5, 6, 7. Glorify thy Son (said Jesus), as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John xvii. 2. For he (the Lord) saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay, but O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction; and that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles. Ro. ix. 15-24. Even so then st this present time also, there is a remnant ac cording to the election of grace. And if by grace, then is it no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace; but if it be of works, then is it no more grace; otherwise work is no more work. Ro. xi. 5, 6. For who maketh thee to differ from another? And what hast thou, that thou didst not receive? Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it. 1 Co. iv. 7. In "whom" ("Christ") we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him whe worketh all things after the counsel of his own will. Ep. i. 11. Is thine eye evil, &c.] See chap. vi. 23. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought, and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee. De. xv. 9. And thou (disobedient Israel) shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, in the siege; so that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children, which he shall leave. De. xxviii. 53, 54. Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats. Pr. xxiii. 6. He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him. Pr. xxviii. 22. From within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts; adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness; these defile the man. Mar. vii. 21, 22. Grudge not one against another, lest ye be condemned; behold the Judge standeth before the door. Ja. v. 9.

Because I am good.] It displeased Jonah exceedingly (that God was merciful to the Ninevites), and he was very angry; and he prayed unto the Lord and said, I pray thee, *** O Lord, was not this my saying when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil? Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die. Then, said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry? Jo. iv. 1-4. and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. And behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last. Lu. xiii. 28, 29, 30. I say unto you (said Christ), that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Lu. xv. 7. Were there not ten

(lepers) cleansed? But where are the nine (said Jesus)? there are not found that returned to give glory to God save this stranger (he was a Samaritan). Lu. xvii. 17, 18. The Pharisees said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? Behold, the world is gone after him. And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast. The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida, of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. John xii. 19, 20, 21. See chap. xxi. 31.

For many be called, &c.] See chap. vii. 13. Many are called, but few are chosen. Mat. xxii. 14. None of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper (said the lord of the marriage supper). Lu. xiv. 24. Moreover, whom "he" ("God") did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Ro. viii. 30. For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1 The. ii. 13. We are bound to give thanks for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth; whereunto he called you by our Gospel to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 The. ii. 13, 14. If a man be a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass; for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. Ja. i. 23, 24, 25.
