from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it 30 from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into

dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mar. ix. 43-48. See chap. xviii. 8.

Pluck it out.] There are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: there be eunuchs which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. Mat. xix. 12. Our old man is crucified with him (Jesus), that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Ro. vi. 6. If ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if ye, through the spirit, do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Ro. viii. 13. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Co. ix. 27. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; and they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Ga. v. 22-24. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, &c. put off all these. Col. iii. 5. 8. Forasmuch as Christ hath suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, &c. 1 Pe. iv. 1-3.

For it is profitable, &c.] What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Mat. xvi. 26. Remove thy way far from her (the strange woman), and come not nigh the door of her house, lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: and thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, and say, How have I hated in struction, and my heart despised reproof; and have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me. I was almost in all evil, in the midst of the congregation and assembly. Pr. v. 814. What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Mar. viii. 36. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? Lu. ix. 24, 25.

30 Offend thee.] And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. Mat. xi. 6. He (that receiveth the seed into stony places) hath not root in himself, but dureth for awhile; for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. Mat. xiii. 21. Get thee behind me, Satan (said Jesus to Peter), thou art an offence unto me, for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Mat. xvi. 23. Whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come: but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh. Mat. xviii. 6, 7. All ye shall be offended because of me this night (said Jesus to his disciples); for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. Mat. xxvi. 31. It were better for him (through whom offences come) that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Lu. xvii. 2. It is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling-stone and rock of offence, and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Ro. ix. 33. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Ro. xiv. 20, 21. If meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 1 Co. viii. 13. I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. Ga. v. 11. The stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner; and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pe. ii. 8.

Cast into hell.] Then said the king to his servants (in the parable of the marriage of the king's son), bind "him" (“who had not a wedding garment") hand and foot, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping

31 hell. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let 32 him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry 33 her that is divorced committeth adultery. Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear

and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxii. 13. Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxv. 30. Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell, yea, I say unto you, fear him. Lu. xii. 5. See chap. xviii. 8.

31 Whosoever shall put away his wife.] The Pharisees came unto him (Jesus), tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? Why did Moses command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? Mat. xix. 3.7. When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her, then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house she may go and be another man's wife. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die which took her to be his wife; her former husband which sent her away may not take her again to be his wife after that she is defiled. De. xxiv. 1-4. They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? Shall not that land be greatly polluted? Je, iii. 1. Is it lawful (said the Pharisees to Jesus) for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh. What, therefore, God hath joined together let not man put asunder. Mar. x. 2-9.

32 I say unto you.] See verse 28, and com. And behold there talked with "him" ("Jesus" on the mount of transfiguration), two men which were Moses and Elias. And there came a voice out of the cloud (which covered the mount), saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him. Lu. ix. 30. 35.

Whosoever shall put away his wife.] See verse 31. Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, suffered you to put away your

wives; but from the beginning it was not so; and I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery; and whoso marrieth her which is put away, committeth adultery. Mat. xix. 8, 9. Yet ye say, wherefore (receiveth not God the offering any more)? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously, yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away; for one covereth violence with his garment. Therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously! Mal. ii. 14-16. Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery. And whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. Lu. xvi. 18. So then, if while her husband liveth, she (his wife) be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband be dead she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Ro. vii. 3. The wife hath no power of her own body, but the husband; and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. Unto the married I (Paul) command, yet not I, but the Lord; let not the wife depart from her husband; but and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband. And let not the husband put away his wife. 1 Co. vii. 4. 10, 11.

33 It hath been said by them of old.] Woe unto you ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor. Mat. xxiii. 16.

Thou shalt not forswear thyself.] Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Er. xx. 7. Ye shall not swear by my name falsely; neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God. Le. xix. 12. If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth, &c. Nu. xxx. 2. De. v. 11. That

thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say 34 unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by 35 Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou 36 swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black: But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: 37 for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Ye have heard 38

which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform unto the Lord thy God. De. xxiii. 23. Pay thy vows unto the Most High. P. 14. Vow, and pay unto the Lord your God. Ps. lxxvi. 11. When thou vowest a vow unto God defer not to pay it. Pay that which thou hast vowed; better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel that it was an error. Wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? Ec. v. 4-6. O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts; perform thy VOWS. Nah. i. 15.

34 Swear not at all.] When thou shalt vow a vow unto the Lord thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it; for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee, and it would be sin in thee. But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee. That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a free-will offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the Lord thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth. De. xxiii. 21-23. All things come alike to all; to him that sweareth as he that feareth an oath. Ec. ix. 2. Above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath; but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Ja. v. 12.

Heaven.] He that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. Mat. xxiii. 22. I dwell in the high and holy place (said the Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity); with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Is. lvii. 15. Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Is. lxvi. 1.

35 The earth.] Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool, for he is holy. Ps. xcix. 5.

The city of the great King.] I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel. 2 Ch. vi. 6. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Ps. xlviii. 1, 2. The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than

all the dwellings of Jacob. Ps. lxxxvii. 2. I am a great King, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen. Mal. i. 14. I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven; prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. Re. xxi. 2. 10.

36 Shalt thou swear by thy head.] Whoso sweareth by the altar sweareth by it and all things thereon; and whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein; and he that shall swear by heaven sweareth by the throne of God. Mat. xxiii. 18. 20. 22.

Because thou canst not make one hair, &c.] Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? Mat. vi. 27. And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? Lu. xii. 25.

37 Let your communication be.] When I (Paul) therefore was thus minded (to come to the Corinthians) did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh? That with me there should be yea, yea, and nay, nay. But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea, and nay; for the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me, and Sylvanus, and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea; for all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. 2 Co. i. 17-20. Let your speech be alway with grace seasoned with salt; that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col. iv. 6. Above all things, my brethren, swear not; neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath; but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Ja. v. 12.

Cometh of evil.] When any one heareth the word of the kingdom and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. Mat. xiii. 19. Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. Mat. xv. 19. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do (said Jesus to the Jews); he was a murderer from the beginning

that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall

and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him; when he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it. John viii. 44. Putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour. Ep. iv. 25. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man, with his deeds. Col. iii. 9. Let your yea, be yea, and your nay, nay, lest ye fall into condemnation. Ja. v. 12.

38 An eye for an eye.] Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. Ex. xxi. 24, 25. If a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake; and if he smite out his man-servant's tooth, or his maid-servant's tooth, he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. Ex. xxi. 26, 27. If a man cause a blemish in his neighbour, as he hath done, so shall it be done to him; breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again. Le. xxiv. 19, 20. Then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother; so shalt thou put the evil way from among you. De. xix. 19.

39 That ye resist not evil.] Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; I am the Lord. Le. xix. 18. This day (said David to Saul) thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee to-day into mine hand in the cave; and some bade me kill thee; but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed. Moreover my father, see, yea see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and killed thee not; know thou and see, that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord avenge me of thee; but mine hand shall not be upon thee. After whom is the king of Israel come out? After whom dost thou pursue; after a dead dog, after a flea? The Lord therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. 1 Sa. xxiv. 10-15. This shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of my heart, unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless (said Abigail to David), or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the lord shall have dealt well with my Lord, then remember thine handmaid. And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee

this day to meet me; and blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. For in very deed, as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted, and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any, &c. 1 Sa. xxv. 31-34. Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day. Now, therefore, let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time. And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not! for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless? David said, furthermore, As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall smite him, or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle and perish. 1 Sa. xxvi. 8—10, If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him (neither have I suffered my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul); if the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh; we cannot be satisfied; my desire is that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book. Job xxxi. 29-31. 35. Say not thou, I will recompense evil, but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee. Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord, and a false balance is not good. Man's goings are of the Lord. How can a man then understand his own way. Pr. xx. 22-24. Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work. Pr. xxiv. 29. Unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Lu. vi. 29. Recompense

no man evil for evil. Ro. xii. 17. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Ro. xii. 18, 19. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another; why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? 1 Co. vi. 7. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 1 The. v. 15. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. He. xii. 4. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Ja. v. 6. Finally, be all of one mind; not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing;

smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And 40 if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go 41 a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and 42

knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 1 Pe. iii. 9.

Whosoever shall smite thee, &c.] Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the Lord from me to speak unto thee? 1 Ki. xxii. 24. Behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. Job xvi. 19. They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. Job xvi. 10. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame, and spitting. Is. 1. 6. He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him; he is filled full with reproach. La. iii. 30. They shall smite the Judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. Mi. v. 1. Unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke, forbid not to take thy coat also. Lu. vi. 29. And when they (that held Jesus) had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee. Lu. xxii. 64. What glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently; but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called; because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps; who did no sin; neither was guile found in his mouth; who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. 1 Pe. ii. 20-23. See chap. xxvi. 67.

40 If any man will sue thee, &c.] There is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. 1 Co. vi. 7. See pre.

me drink I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mat. xxv. 35, 36. 40. If there be among you a poor man, of one of thy brethren, within any of thy gates, in thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother. But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need in that which he wanteth. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release is at hand, and thine eye be evil against thy brother, and thou givest him nought, and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee: thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved, when thou givest unto him. Because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in the land. De. xv. 7-11. If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade; and mine arm be broken from the bone. Job xxxi. 16, 17. 19. 22. The righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth; I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth, and his seed is blessed. Ps, xxxvii. 21. 25. 26. He (the good man) hath dispersed; he hath given to the poor, his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. Ps. cxii. 9. A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Ps. cxii. 5. Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go and come again, and to-morrow I will give, when thou hast it by thee. Pr. iii. 27, 28. There is that scattereth, and yet encreaseth, and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty, The liberal soul shall be made fat, and he
