Concerning the ITALIAN VERBS.

A

FTER that the Learner has made himfelf perfect in the Auxiliary Verbs Havere to have, and Eere to be, before fet down Page 36, he ought to begin to conjugate the Verbs Regular, which he will find eafy to be performed by the annexed Table of Verbs: It may however be neceffary to make a few Remarks here, that may be affifting to him in the Formation of the Moods and Tenfes.

I. The Verbs of the Italian Tongue may be faid to confist only of three Conjugations, tho' Grammarians do frequently diftinguish between ére long, and ĕre fhort, as in the Latin; but as this Diftinction. forms no Variation of Tenfes, it is needlefs to introduce it into Practice, and the Verbs may be diftinguished by the three Terminations, as in the annexed Table.

II. The firft Perfon of all Tenfes is formed from the Infinitive Mood of Verbs, by dropping the Termination re, and changing the penultimate or taft Syllable but one, according to the different Tenfe of the Verb.

III. The Prefent Tenfe of the Italian Verbs always ends in O, as of amare, temere, fentire, are formed amo, temo, fento; In like manner, the first Person of the Plural Number of this Tenfe, in general ends in iámo.

IV. The Imperfect Tenfe of all Verbs ends in firft Perfon Singular, and in vamo first Person

Plural;

Plural; as ama-vo, teme-vo, fenti-vo, Singular; amavamo, crede-vamo, fenti-vamo, Plural.

V. The Definite Tenfe is formed of the Infinitive by changing re into ; as of ama-re, teme-re, fenti-re, are formed, ama-i, teme-i, fenti-i: Note, the fecond Perfon fingular of Verbs of this Tenfe, both Regular and Irregular end in fti, and the Plural in fe; as amafti, credefti, fentifti, Singular, amate, credefte, fentifte Plural, and that the third Perfon Singular is always accented, as amò, temi, fenti. The like Formation of the Tenfes of Verbs will be found throughout the different Moods, by obferving the Termination of the Infinitive Mood of each Verb Regular, and bringing that to the ending of each Tenfe fet down in the Table of Verbs annexed.

It may be here obferved of Verbs, that in general they be pronounced with the Accent on the Penultima, or laft Syllable fave one, except in the Future Tenfe, which has always a grave Accent on the Laft Syllable of the first and third Person Singular; as, amerò I will love, amerà he will love; the like Accent is alfo placed on the third Perfon Singular of the Definite Tenfe, as is above obferved; as, amò he loved, &. Let it also be remembered that the Verbs in Italian, are most frequently declined, and wrote without the Pronouns Nominative, for which reafon they are here not fet down, except in the Optative Mood.
