Library Regulations. I. The Library shall be open every day in the week (Sundays excepted) from Eleven in the morning to Five in the afternoon, except on New Year's Day, Good Friday to Easter Monday inclusive, and Christmas week; and it shall be closed one month in the year, in order to be thoroughly cleaned, viz. from the first to the last day of September. II. Every Member of the Society shall be entitled (subject to the Rules) to borrow as many as four volumes at one time. Exceptions: 1. Dictionaries, Encyclopædias, and other works of reference and cost, Minute Books, Manuscripts, Atlases, Books and Illustrations in loose sheets, Drawings, Prints and unbound Numbers of Periodical Works, unless with the special written sanction of the President. 2. Maps or Charts, unless by written order of the President, Council, or Secretaries. 3. New Works before the expiration of a month after reception. III. The title of every Book, Pamphlet, Map, or Work of any kind lent, shall first be entered in the register, with the borrower's signature, or accompanied by a separate note in his hand. IV. No work of any kind shall be retained longer than one month; but at the expiration of that period, or sooner, the same shall be returned free of expense, and may then, upon re-entry, be again borrowed, provided that no application shall have been made in the mean time by any other Member. V. In all cases a list of the Books, &c., or other property of the Society, in the possession of any member, shall be sent in to the Secretary on or before the 1st of July in each year. VI. In every case of loss or damage to any volume, or other property of the Society, the borrower shall make good the same. VII. No stranger shall be admitted to the Library except by the introduction of a Member, whose name, together with that of the Visitor, shall be inserted in a book kept for that purpose. VIII. Members transgressing any of the above Regulations shall be reported by the Secretary to the Council, who will take such steps as the case may require. By Order of the Council, December 9, 1850.
