As well as it does you; and I should do it

[ocr errors]

With much more eafe for my good-will is to it,

And your's it is against.

Pro. Poor worm! thou art infected;

This vifitation fhews it.

Mira. You look wearily.

Fer. No, noble iniftrefs; 'tis fresh morning with me, When you are by at right. I do befeech you, (Chiefly that I might fet it in my prayers)

What is your name?

Mira. Miranda. O my father, I've broke your heft to fay fo.

Fer. Admir'd Miranda!

Indeed, the top of admiration; worth
What's dearest to the world! full many a lady
I've ey'd with beft regard, and many a time
Th' harmony of their tongues hath into bondage
Brought my too diligent ear; for feveral virtues
Have I lik'd feveral women, never any

With fo full foul, but fome defect in her

Did quarrel with the nobleft grace fhe ow'd,
And put it to the foil.

But you,

you,

So perfect, and fo peerless, are created

[blocks in formation]

One of my fex; no woman's face remember,
Save from my glass mine own; nor have I feen
More that I may call men, than you, good friend,
And my dear father; how features are abroad,
I'm skillefs of; but, by my modefty,

(The jewel in my dower), I would not wish
Any companion in the world but you;
Nor can imagination form a fhape,

Befides yourself, to like of. But I prattle
Something too wildly, and my father's precepts
I therein do forget.

Fer. I am, in my condition,

A prince, Miranda; I do think, a King;

(I would, not fo!) and would no more endure

This wooden slavery, than I would fuffer

The flesh-fly blow my mouth. Hear my foul speak; The very inftant that I faw you, did

My

My heart fly to your fervice, there refides
To make me flave to it, and for your fake
Am I this patient log-man.

Mira. Do you love me?

Fer. O heav'n, O earth, bear witnefs to this found, And crown what I profefs with kind event,

If I fpeak true; if hollowly, invert

What beft is boaded me, to mischief! I,
Beyond all limit of what elfe i' th' world,
Do love, prize, honour you.

Mira. I am a fool,

To weep at what I'm glad of.

Pro. Fair encounter

Of two most rare affections! heav'ns rain grace
On that which breeds between 'em!

Fer. Wherefore weep you?

Mira. At mine unworthiness, that dare not offer, What I defire to give; and much less take, What I fhall die to want: but this is trifling; And all the more it feeks to hide itself,

The bigger bulk it fhews. Hence; bafhful cunning;
And prompt me, plain and holy innocence.

1 am your wife, if you will marry me;
If not, I'll die your maid: to be your fellow,
You may deny me; but I'll be your fervant,
Whether you will or no.

Fer. My miftress, dearest,
And I thus humble ever.
Mira. My husband then?

Fer. Ay, with a heart as willing

As bondage e'er of freedom; here's my hand.
Mira. And mine, with my heart in't; and now farewel

Till half an hour hence.

Fer. A thoufand, thoufand.

Pro. So glad of this as they, I cannot be, Who are furpris'd withal; but my rejoicing At nothing can be more. I'll to my book; For yet, ere fupper-time, muft I perform Much bufinefs appertaining.

SCENE

SCENE II. Changes to another part of the island.

Enter Caliban, Stephano, and Trinculo.

Ste. Tell not me; when the butt is out, we will drink water, not a drop before; therefore bear up, and board 'em, fervant-monfter; drink to me.

Trin. Servant-monster! the folly of this ifland! they fay, there's but five upon this ifle; we are three of them, if the other two be brain'd like us, the state totters.

Ste. Drink, fervant monfter, when I bid thee; thy eyes are almoft fet in thy head.

Trin. Where fhould they be fet elfe? he were a brave monster indeed, if they were fet in his tail.

Ste. My man-monster hath drown'd his tongue in fack: for my part, the fea cannot drown me. I fwam, ere I could recover the fhore, five and thirty leagues, off and on; by this light, thou shalt be my lieutenant, monster, or my standard.

Trin. Your lieutenant, if you lift; he's no ftandard, Ste. We'll not run, Monfieur Monster.

Trin. Nor go neither: but you'll lie like dogs, and yet fay nothing neither.

Ste. Moon-calf, fpeak once in thy life, if thou beeft a good moon- -calf.

Cal. How does thy honour? let me lick thy fhoe; I'll not ferve him, he is not valiant.

Trin Thou lyeft, moft ignorant monfter, I am in cafe to juftle a conftable; why, thou debofh'd fifh thou, was there ever a man a coward that hath drunk fo much fack as I to-day? wilt thou tell a monftrous lye, being but half a fish, and half a monster?

Cal. Lo, how he mocks me: wilt thou let him, my Lord?

Trin. Lord, quoth he! that a monster should be fuch a natural!

Cal. Lo, lo, again; bite him to death, I pr'ythee. Ste. Trinculo, keep a good tongue in your head; if you prove a mutineer, the next tree- the poor monfter's my fubject, and he fhall not fuffer indignity.

[blocks in formation]

Cal. I thank my Noble Lord... Wilt thou be pleas'd to hearken once again to the fuit I made to thee? Ste. Marry, will I; kneel, and repeat it; I will ftand, and fo fhall Trinculo.

Enter Ariel invifible.

Cal. As I told thee before, I am fubject to a tyrant, forcerer, that by his cunning hath cheated me of the ifland.

Ari. Thou lyeft.

Cal. Thou lyeft, thou jefting monkey, thou;?
I would my valiant mafter would destroy thee: ·
I do not lye.

Ste. Trinculo, if you trouble him any more in's taley by this hand I will fupplant fome of your teeth. Trin. Why, I faid nothing...

Ste. Mum, then, and no more; proceed. Cal. I fay, by forcery he got this ifle; From me he got it. If thy Greatnefs will Revenge it on him, (for, I know, thou dar'ft, But this thing dares not,)

Ste. That's moft certain.

0

Cal. Thou fhalt be lord of it, and I'll ferve thee. Y Ste. How now fhall this be compas'd ? can'st thou bring me to the party?

Cal, Yea, yea, my Lord, I'll yield him thee afleep, Where thou may'st knock a nail into his head. Ari. Thou lyeft, thou canst not.

Cal. What a py'd ninny's this? thou fcurvy patch! I do befeech thy Greatnefs give him blows,

And take his bottle from him; when that's gone,
He fhall drink nought but brine, for I'll not thew him
Where the quick freshes are.

the

Ste. Trinculo, run into no further danger: interrupt monster one word further, and, by this hand, I'll turn my mercy out of doors, and make a stock-fifh of theed

Trin. Why, what did I? I did nothing; I'll go further off.

Ste. Didit thou not fay, he ly'd?

Ari. Thou lyeft.

Ste. Do I fo? take you that.

VOL. I.

[Beats him.

As

a

As

you like this, give me the lye another time.

Trin. I did not give thee the lye; out o' your wits, and hearing too? A pox o' your bottle! this can fack and drinking do. A murrain on your moniter, and the devil take your fingers!

Cal. Ha, ha, ha.

Ste. Now, forward with your tale; pr'ythee, stand further off.

Cal. Beat him enough; after a little time

I'll beat him too.

Ste. Stand further. Come, proceed.

Cal. Why, as I told thee, 'tis a custom with him
I' th' afternoon to fleep; there thou may'st brain him,
Having first feiz'd his books: or with a log

Batter his fcull, or paunch him with a stake,
Or cut his wezand with thy knife. Remember,
First to poffefs his books; for without them
nor hath not

He's but a fot, as I am;
One spirit to command.

As rootedly as I.

They all do hate him,
Burn but his books;

He has brave utenfils, (for fo he calls them),

Which when he has an house he'll deck withal.
And that most deeply to confider, is

The beauty of his daughter; he himself

Calls her a non-pareil : I ne'er faw woman,

But only Sycorax my dam, and fhe;

But fhe as far furpaffes Sycorax,

As greatest does the leaft.

Ste. Is it fo brave a lafs?

Cal. Ay, Lord; the will become thy bed, I warrant, And bring thee forth brave brood.

Ste. Monster, I will kill this man: his daughter and I will be King and Queen, fave our Graces; and Trinculo and thyfelf fhall be viceroys. Doft thou like the plot, Trinculo?

Trin. Excellent.

Ste Give me thy hand; I am forry I beat thee: but, while thou liv'ft, keep a good tongue in thy head. Cal. Within this half-hour will he be afleep;

Wilt thou destroy him then?

Ste: Ay, on my honour.

Ari. This will I tell my master.

Cal.
