8 Blest fellowship how sweet,
With God the sacred Three
But if imperfect grace is bliss,
What then must glory be!
9 Here fix, my roving heart!

Here wait, my warmest love!
Till the communion be complete

In nobler scenes above. DR..

97 L. M. Ulverston 179. Rippon's 188.
Desiring Communion with God.

1 MY rising soul, with strong desires,
To perfect happiness aspires,

With steady steps would tread the road
That leads to heaven-that leads to God.
2 I thirst to drink unmingled love
From the pure fountain-head above:
My dearest Lord, I long to be
Emptied of sin, and full of thee.
3 For thee I pant, for thee I burn;
Art thou withdrawn? again return,
Nor let me be the first to say,

Thou wilt not hear when sinners pray.

Walking with God, Gen. v. 24,

1 FOR a closer walk with God,
A calm and beavenly frame;

A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb

2 Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus, and his word?

3 What peaceful hours I then enjoy'd!"
How sweet their memory
But now I find an aching voiding
The world can never fill.

4 Return, O holy Dove! return,
Sweet messenger of rest!

I hate the sins that made thee mourn,
And drove thee from my breast.
5 The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee.

6 So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;

So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb..

1

THAT I knew the secret place,
Where I might find my God!
I'd spread my wants before his face,
And pour my woes abroad.

2 I'd tell him how my sins arise,
What sorrows I sustain;

[ocr errors]

How grace decays, and comfort dies,
Paz. And leaves my heart in pain.)
3 He knows what arguments I'd take
To wrestle with my God';

I'd plead for his own mercy's sake
And for my Saviour's blood.

4 My God will pity my complaints,
And heal my broken bones;
He takes the meaning of his saints,
The language of their groans.

5 Arise, my soul, from deep distress,
And banish every fear;

He calls thee to his throne of grace.
To spread thy sorrows there.

DR. WATTS'S SERMONS.

Sanctification and Pardon.

1 WHERE shall we sinners hide our heads?

Can rocks or mountains save?

Or shall we wrap us in the shades
Of midnight and the grave?
2 Is there no shelter from the eye
Of a revenging God?

Jesus, to thy dear wounds we fly;
Bedew us with thy blood."

3 Those guardian drops our souls secure,
And wash away our sin;

Eternal justice frowns no more,

And conscience smiles within.

4 We bless that wond'rous purple stream
That cleanses every stain;

Yet are our souls but half redeem'd,
If sin, the tyrant, reign.

5 Lord, blast his empire with thy breath!
That cursed throne must fall;

Ye flattering plagues, that work our death,
Fly, for we hate you all.

DR. WATTS'S LYRICS.

101 ((1st P.)) L. M. Mark's 65. Bowden 78.

Abundant Life by Christ our Shepherd, John x. 10.

1 PRAISE to our Shepherd's gracious name, Who on so kind an errand came;

Came, that by him his flock might live, And more abundant life receive. 2 Hail, great Immanuel! from above, High seated on thy throne of love, 0 pour the vital torrent down,— Thy people's joy, their Lord's renown.3 Scarce half alive we sigh and сту, Scarce raise to thee our languid eye; Kind Saviour, let our dying state Compassion in thy heart create.

4 The shepherd's blood the sheep must heal, I Omay we all its influence feel! Till inward deep experience show,

Justification and Sanctification.

WE hail that condescending grace

Which shows a Saviour's righteousness!
Eternal honours to that name

Which covers all our guilt and shame!
2 O may his blood, that boundless sea,
Purge all our deepest stains awayɔs. 1-I
And we, renew'd by grace divine, bak
More in our Lord's resemblance shine.

While Jesus silence breaks;
No angel's harp such music yields
As what my shepherd speaks:
I know my sheep, he cries,
My soul approves them well:
Vain is the treacherous world's disguise,
And vain the rage of hell, god amKI
I freely feed them wowɔ doi!!
With tokens of my love;

But richer pastures I prepare,

I to my sheep will give;

And, while my throne unshaken stands,
Shall all my chosen live.

This tried Almighty hand

Is rais'd for their defence;

Where is the power shall reach them there?

Or what shall force them thence?

Enough, my gracious Lord

Let faith triumphant cry;

My heart can on this promise live,

Can on this promise die. DR. DODDRIDGE.

Noah preserved in the Ark, and the Believer in Christ,
1 Peter iii. 20, 21.

1 THE deluge, at the Almighty's call,
In what impetuous streams it fell !
Swallow'd the mountains in its rage,
And swept a guilty world to hell.
2 In vain the tallest sons of pride
Fled from the close-pursuing wave;
Nor could their mightiest towers defend,
