the unworthy reception they gave to that wonderful overture of divine grace (1) first offered to their nation; and the miseries of that infatuated people, consequent upon their unbelief, and wicked rejection of their Messiah and spiritual king. Their prophetic history was next to be pursued through the course of seventeen centuries of their abandonment, prophetically called the "INDIGNATION," down to the present time. In all this long period, by their uncommon sufferings, and equally wonderful preservation, even in the worst of times, (their very dispersion still serving the secret purposes of God's wisdom and mercy,) they have been a standing miracle, and an ocular proof of the credibility (2) of divine revelation.

Next, followed the account which the prophets have given of their national repentance and conversion, of which hitherto no very promising symptoms have appeared. This mighty revolution, happen when it may, is of primary importance in the prophetic writings; from the happy consequences it will

have, not only upon that singular nation of dead and dry bones, thus about to be quickened to spiritual and political life, and to become truly "a kingdom of priests, an boly nation;" (3) but upon all the nations of the earth together with them. astonishingly closed against the clear light of their own scriptures, and the most rational and convincing arguments of sound reasoning. The veil will be removed all at once from their hearts, and their SECOND EXODUS distinguished by some remarkable tokens of God's never-failing love (6) to the seed of Abraham his servant, will vindicate in the eyes of the whole world, the faithfulness of the divine promises, and the truth of sacred prophecy.

II. By way of illustration, and to give additional confirmation to the above sketch, of the prophetic history of the Jews, it was my object in the next place, to shew the nature of the great stumbling block, and the strength and magnitude of that obstruction; which in addition to the groundless "scandal of the cross," and their own national prejudices, had been laid in their way, by the gross errors and really scandalous idolatry of the church of Rome. The afflictive weight with which it pressed upon them, as the instru
