SIR

BEing informed that there is a Report fpread in the Army, and that fome write from the Hague, that I refused to march with the Battalions. of Hanover, to the Affiftance of the Troops of the State, altho' his Highness the Prince of Friezeland had fent me his Order to do it; and that this Refufal was the only Caufe of the great Lofs fuftained Ff 4

by that Infantry, I cannot forbear to expofe to all the World, the Falfity of that Calumny, and in order thereunto, I shall give an exact Account of every thing that happen'd at my Poft from the beginning to the end of the Battle, and of my 'Conduct therein with the Four Battalions of HanC nover. His Highnefs the Prince of Friezland may remember, that the Day of the Battle, a little before it begun, when I had the Honour to meet him, he ask'd me what Orders I had, and that I anfwer'd that I had none, and expected that he fhould order me, whether I should regulate my felf according to my Right or Left. His Highness told me thereupon, that in all appearance it was to the Right, and that I fhould do well to regulate my felf thereby, accordingly. The Major of Brigade brought me in that very moment the Difpofition of the Attack on the Right. Some time after, obferving that the Troops of the States at'tack'd a fecond time the Intrenchment of the Enemy, and that they met with very great Difficulties, I fent to their Affiftance, without being defired 6 by any body to do it, the Battalions of Gauvain and Tecklenburgh, which, with the Forces of the States got into the Intrenchment of the Enemy, and obliged them to quit the fame. It was there that thofe Two Battalions had all their Officers either 6 killed or wounded, infomuch, that there remained but an Enfign in the Battalion of Gauvain, and Captain Limburg and a Captain-Lieutenant in that of Tecklenburgh, all the reft as aforefaid, being 'killed or wounded.

Notwithstanding thofe Troops had forced the Intrenchment of the Enemy, they continued to make a great Fire from their Line, which was be'fore me; whereupon, I caufed the other two Battalions that were with me, to make a Motion on the Right, to endeavour, if poffible, to diflodge the Enemy from that Poft. At that time Mon'fieur Goslinga came full gallop to me, and asked me, whether I would not advance; whereupon I anfwered, that he might fee that I was advancing, and defired him to order the Pruffians on my Right to make the fame Motion, and march forwards as I was doing,, being not able, only with Two Battalions,

talions, to maintain my felf. Monfieur Goslinga m ftopt a moment, and then went away with Precipitation, because the Enemy had forced our Left 'to abandon the Intrenchments. I maintained however the Poft I had gained in advancing, notwithftanding the great Fire the Enemy made upon me from a hollow way, whereby the Regiment of du Breuil had above 40 Men killed in the first Difcharge. Mean time, Prince Eugene fent me twice Orders by his Aid de Camp, to return to my former Poft, which I did accordingly. Soon after, that Prince and the Duke of Marlborough went by my Poft towards the Left, and Monfieur de Vink, Lieutenant-General, brought me Orders from them, not to quit the Poft where we were, till my Lord Duke himself order'd us to march. We continued accordingly therein, till all the Horfe and Foot of the Right advanced, and then we did the fame, pufhing on the Enemy, and drove them from the Hollow-way, where they made ftill a ftand, till at laft the Battle ended.

"The Lofs of the Four Battalions I had with me, will appear by the examining of the Lifts, which will fhew, that they have fuffered very near as much as the other Battalions which were commanded for the Attack. Seeing they write from the Hague, that the Prince of Friczland fent to me to defire fome Succours for feconding the Troops of the States; I declare, that this is a notorious Fallity. It may be, that that Prince gave fuch Orders to fome body, but I maintain that no body fpoke to me of it. I therefore only defire, but that they would tell me the Name of the Perfon who was appointed to bring me that Order, • and fee whether he will dare fay, that he gave me the fame. The want of this Circumftance will 'fhew the Injuftice and Wrong they have done me in publishing fuch Calumnies at the Hague. By thefe Means I fhall difcover the Author of thofe Impoftures, to look upon him as the bafeft and most dishonest of all Men, for having endeavour'd 'by a falfe Report, to blacken the Reputation of the 'faid Battalions and mine.
