his power soon fails, and if a stud horse, is rendered useless. One of these trees adjoining a large stable will render all the horses unhealthy. Its action on other animals, as far as I am informed, is precisely similar. It ought to be a grand veterinary remedy.

"It softens steel. The old mechanics in the colony, before tempering by the forge was so well understood, used to drive their brittle chisels and plane irons into the Papaya tree, and after a day or two extracted them and found them to answer all the purposes of their calling.

"With regard to tough meat, it is only necessary to wrap up your meat, of whatever kind, in a leaf of this tree for a few minutes. Or, if the tree is near, and the leaves high up, as is sometimes the case, drive a nail into the tree and hang up your meat for a few minutes. Nearly all these beliefs may be mythical or superstitious, as was the case in relation to the Upas tree. But there is always some truth at the bottom of these myths and beliefs, and we should not reject them without subjecting them to a scientific test.

Mind.

(2) Mental faculties unusually active; can study longer without being wearied; likes to read.

Wants to be alone.

Stupid, confused feeling. Easily confused.

Inability to think quickly.

Forgetful. Impatient.

Does not like to be talked to, or to answer questions.

Head.

Vertigo and throbbing frontal headache, with nausea.

(2) Headache increased for twenty-four hours, passing backward to occiput and nape of neck, drawing the head backward.

(3) Dull, violent frontal headache.

(3) Dullness of the head.

(3) Bruised feeling on left side of head.

(2) Dull, steady pain in forehead.

Parietal region very sore, with throbbing and beating.

Headache involving the eyeball.

Fullness of head in the evening.

Sick headache returned which troubled him ten years ago.

Severe headache after eating pop-corn and candy, worse toward evening.

Dull, pressure pain, aggravated by bright light, by warm air, and by motion, relieved by cold air and by sleeping.

Headache relieved by rubbing.

Eyes.

Prickling sensation in eyes.

Eyeballs feel dry.

Pain in eyeball.

Cannot see as well as usual.

Inflammation of right lid-feeling as if a foreign substance were in it. (This symptom continued long after ceased taking the drug, preventing much reading by artificial light. Left off the proving on account of this symptom.)

Nose.

Nose stopped up, worse on left side.

(2) Coryza very profuse, watery, colorless or limpid; bland. Nasal discharge thick.

Face.

Facial neuralgia on left side, four days, very severe (never had it before.)

Bad taste in the mouth.

(2) Tongue dry at night.

Mouth.

Right lower molar teeth sore, with some pain.

Toothache in left lower molars.

Toothache much aggravated by cold water.

Stomach.

(2) Diminished appetite in morning.

Food tastes flat.

Tasteless eructations.

Faint for want of food, but the food distresses the stomach.

Stool and Anus.

Stool soft and mushy; first part large, hard and dry, breaking

into balls; latter part mushy, with wind.

Action of bowels irregular.

Constipation.

Urinary Organs.

Less sediment in urine than formerly.

Burning in urethra during and after urinating, with continuous desire.

Frequent desire to urinate.

Urine scanty; increased.

Straining with first urinary effort in the morning, attended with burning and scalding as if an obstruction were being overcome, which being removed the urine passed easily.

Tearing pain in bladder, with desire to urinate.

Sound of running water (even in a horse's throat when drinking) causes irresistible desire to urinate at once.

Female Sexual Organs.

Very nervous before and during menses.

Takes cold easily during menses.

Male Sexual Organs.

Sexual functions greatly depressed.

Sexual organs flaccid and lifeless.

Nocturnal emissions without lascivious dreams.

Erections but no emissions.

Erections toward morning.

Erections not long lasting and are not due to sexual thoughts.

Sexual instinct abnormally aroused.

Severe pain running from perineum to a point in middle of

penis, as of a rough, jagged body forcing its way out.

Pain in left testicle awakens at night.

Respiratory Organs.

(3) Hoarseness, in the evening.

Pain in the larynx.

Pain deep in upper lobe of left lung.

Dull, heavy pain in left lung, extending through to the back, and

becoming sharp and stabbing.

Pain in entire left lung.

Shooting pains in the lungs and around the heart.

Lungs feel tired and hot.

Cough keeping him awake at night.

Cough with easy expectoration, and soreness of left lung. Irrepressible, violent, spasmodic cough, coming on suddenly without warning.

Heart and Fulse.

Pulse slow, 15 beats slower than usual, not over 60 per minute while sitting immediately after exercise.

Pulse slow and weak.

Pulse 100, Temp. 102°.

Shooting pains in region of heart.

Neck and Back.

Rheumatic pain in left shoulder.

Severe pain in region of left kidney, running around the ilium. Very sore feeling in a point just under left scapula.

(2) Steady pain in back in region of kidneys.

Bruised feeling in left side.

Limbs go to sleep easily.

Extremities.

Pricking in the limbs; numb and sleepy.

Hands and feet cold.

Upper Extremities.

Left arm helpless.

Right hand and fingers become numb while asleep, particularly little finger.

(2) Numbness of ring finger on right hand, more marked on outer side.

Forefinger on either hand felt cold and dead. Blood stopped circulating for some time.

Lower Extremities.

Lower limbs weak and trembling.

Right leg went to sleep while writing.

Prickling and tingling throughout, but not in foot.
