COMP. PERF. Having been. The tenses of the Subjunctive Mood are explained in the large Grammar; but it is proper in this place to shew the difference between the past tense "If I was," and the suppositional tense "If I were." The past tense expresses a doubt, or condition respecting a fact, which if it ever did exist, must have existed in some past time; thus, "If he was present, he certainly voted;" "If he was to blame, he deserved punishment." Here I am in doubt respecting some past action. The suppositional tense is a term adopted, not because the tense itself implies supposition or condition more than the other tenses, but because the term serves to distinguish it from the past tense. The suppositional tense signifies future time; thus, "If he were poor, he would be less culpable;" "Were I to mention it, he would not attend." The other auxiliaries may, can, shall, will, are conjugated in their simple state; thus, 2. Thou shouldst, wouldst, mightst, couldst. 1. I love, am loving, or do 1. We love, are loving, or do 2. Thou lovest, art loving, or 2. You love, are loving, or do dost love. 3. He, she, or it loves, or 3. loveth, is loving, or does love. love. They love, are loving, or do love. The Present Tense has three forms; first, the simple; as, "I love;" second, the progressive, expressing the continuation of an action, and which is formed by adding the present participle to the verb to be; as, "I am loving;" third, the emphatic; as, “I do love." The Past Tense has also three forms. 1. I loved, was loving, or 1. We loved, were loving, or did love. did love. 2. Thou lovedst, wast loving, 2.
