HOMER AND ENGLISH METRE.

AN ESSAY ON THE TRANSLATING OF

THE ILIAD AND ODYSSEY,

With a literal rendering in the Spenserian Stanza
of the First Book of the Odyssey, and
Specimens of the Iliad.

LONDON: BELL AND DALDY.

"Some years ago Mr. Barter published a translation of the Iliad' in the Spenserian stanza; and having completed the Odyssey' in manuscript in the same metre, he has recently printed the first book, with a powerfully written introductory essay On the Translating of the Iliad and Odyssey.'

"The translation of Mr. Barter is literal, and he has facilitated his task of finding the triple rhymes by incorporating in his work many old but good words, out of date, or rarely used since the time of Chaucer. Such archaisms added an irresistible charm to the Spenserian poems of Thomson and Byron, and, in addition to their authority, Mr. Barter may plead the Horatian • multa renascentur quæ jam cecidere,' for the restoration of such words as withouten, dight, rede, y-blent, &c. Such expressions, moreover, sparingly introduced as they have been by Mr. Barter, throw an antique air over his translation well suited to the venerable father of epic poetry.

"Of his metrical criticism the following masterly example will be welcome to most readers of the Iliad.' It relates to two or three lines of wonderful beauty in the opening of the Iliad.'" See page 13 of the work.

"The general merits of Mr. Barter's specimens of his translation are sufficient to render the publication of the remainder desirable. The author has brought to his task many of the qualifications necessary to its adequate execution. His excellent preliminary dissertations, and the body of notes which he has subjoined to the Iliad' and the first book of the Odyssey' manifest a wide extent of classical erudition, a thorough command of the resources of the English language, and a full appreciation, not only of the merits of his great original, but of the magnitude and requirements of the work which its translator has to accomplish."-Morning Post.

"As the views propounded by the author are original and accurate, we will lay before the reader some of their features.

"In the preface to the Iliad' will be found some very pertinent remarks on the distinction between the real and the artificial epic.

"The specimens of translation given are both spirited and faithful."- The Sun.

The book before us is one of the best we have seen for a long time. Mr. Barter explains his principles first in an Essay on The Translating of Homer.' With much that he says we agree.

"Mr. Barter's specimens show his own scholarship and refinement."-The Literary Churchman.

"There have been no indications to induce the unprejudiced to look san

guinely for the advent,' to quote the words of an amusing antihexametrist, Mr. Barter, of the coming pedestrian who is to walk into popular English acceptance at hexameter pace.' To the writer just quoted, those who would read in brief all the most telling arguments against the importation of this unEnglish metre, at any rate for Homeric translation, may be referred without hesitation.

"From the perusal of his sensible remarks they will probably rise with their faces set like flints against the attempted introduction.

"We have examined Mr. Barter's strictly literal version in the stanza of Spenser."-Saturday Review.

THE ILIAD OF HOMER,

TRANSLATED ALMOST LITERALLY, IN THE SPENSERIAN STANZA, WITH PREFACE AND NOTES.

LONDON: LONGMAN AND CO.

1854.

"Mr. Barter introduces his performance with an exceedingly well-written Preface, in defence of his theory of literal translation, in exposition of his creed on the subject of poetic diction, and in illustration of the distinction between the real and the artificial epic."-Globe.

"To transform the great epic of Homer into a really readable English poem, without destroying its idiomatic character, was a task as yet to be accomplished. The problem has been solved with admirable skill and eminent success by the author of the present volume. Keeping close not only to the thoughts, but to the expressions of the original poem, he has reproduced them in a thoroughly English garb, in the Spenserian stanza."-John Bull.

"Mr. Barter has succeeded in accomplishing the main object of his work, which he truly describes as the most literal metrical English version of the Iliad hitherto published, and certainly the most literal in rhyme.'”—Literary Gazette.

"The spelling of the Greek names is restored. The epithets are carefully translated."-The Dublin University Magazine.

"It is our duty to assert at once that this is a learned and careful performance. We think Mr. Barter has done right in retaining the Greek names of the Homeric heroes, rather than their Latin substitutes. The notes are important, and convey much information."-The Educational Times.
