formers, by whom God raised this edifice? Burning and shining lights, as the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof.' They drank deep of the genuine spirit of Christianity; manifested its vital influence by an exemplary holiness, propagated its principles with apostolic zeal, and died in its defence. Their memorial remains with us, and it is precious. These were the men who expressed the sentiments of their hearts, and the foundation of their hopes and consolations, in our Articles and Homilies: let us therefore imitate their example, let us tread in their steps."-Yes, my dear Sir, we have great reason to be thankful that we are called upon, and privileged to do so; and I earnestly pray, that the God of all grace may strengthen and direct us therein; for surely we may with truth affirm, that "the lines are fallen unto us in pleasant places."

UTILITY OR EXPEDIENCY OF

SUCH A SOCIETY

IN THE PRESENT DAY.

THE very object of the Bible Society, proclaims the excellency of its nature, viz. the universal circulation of the word of God. Its very first resolution, declares the simplicity and purity of its motive-"The Bible to be circulated, at least within these realms, shall be the authorised translation, and that without note or comment."-Were it the object of the Society, to make proselytes to any other cause, than the cause of truth, such a resolution would never have appeared on their books.-Among other characteristic marks, I conceive that the great simplicity of its origin, plan, and design, decidedly marks it as the work of God. We find that the prophets of the Lord, were not chosen from among the great ones of the earth. When God made choice of one, to reign over Judah, and who was also to be the most eminent type of him, who was to rule his people Israel, "He took him from the sheep-folds " and when our blessed Lord "called whom he would to be
