Bert Archer, writing in Quill and Quire, was unenthusiastic about Atwood's newest novel. However, the reviewer in the September 15 issue of Booklist raved. Based on a true case of Grace Marks, a women convicted of killing her employer and his mistress, it is written almost entirely in reconstructions of Victorian prose styles from letters, transcribed thoughts and conversations and legal documents.
