Small 4to. fine copy in green morocco extra, gilt edges Madrid, 1646
This was an official summary made for the King of the exact state and form of his
government in all the departments of the Indies. It was intended to be more ample
and more useful than the Notitia Dignitatum of the old Roman Empire.

12 preliminary leaves and 172 numbered leaves.

another copy, modified and augmented issue; purple morocco extra, gilt edges 1646 A thirteenth preliminary leaf is added containing Erratas. Some leaves of the text (ff. 10, 11, 22, 23, 33, 36) were reprinted for the purpose of making changes, and an Appendice added which is foliated 173-183. Besides, there is a further addition concerning the Religious Orders, 4 leaves paged 1-8; and 5 leaves of Noticias Importantes de la Edad . . numbered 1-5.

He had lived for eighteen years in Paraguay. This translation was made by the daughter of the poet Coleridge. 395 DOMENECH (Em.) Paris, 1860
The MS. was certainly not the work of "a dirty-minded German boy ", but of an
Indian who had received some education in a Moravian school. The nature of the
designs will render this book one of permanent commercial value.

Published by subscription for the purpose of raising a fund towards the relief of the widows and children left by British soldiers slain in "the present unnatural rebellion." £290 was the outcome after the payment of all expenses. The text is diversified with occasional abuse of the rebels, and remarks upon various actions during the conflict. It is therefore more interesting than a book of purely military science, but it is still worth reading as a set of notes upon military duties.

On p. 190 a footnote is cut out; which seems to be the case with all the known copies but one only. It was a proposition to inoculate the Americans with the small-pox. 397 DORSEY (George A.) Tracts: Crania from the Necropolis of Ancon, Peru,

commenced by Ramirez, was interrupted after the appearance of Vol. I, by the fall of
Maximilian, and was only resumed and completed several years later.

From the nature of the composition, and the writer's exceptional possession of
sources of information, closed to others,-Fray Diego Duran's history must take a
foremost place among books of its kind. It is an indispensable companion to
Sahagun, Torquemada, and Ixtlilxochiti.

There is hardly any library, public or private, in England that can boast the possession of all the above valuable periodicals. They are absolutely necessary for the study of scientific men who cannot afford to let even the Dutch language exclude them from a whole world of knowledge. But, unfortunately, sets are very scarce, and the opportunities of gathering them are very few.

VERY RARE. This is a direct translation by W. PHILLIP (in which form the
name is given at foot of the dedication to Sir James Scudamore) from the Dutch
original which appears in a Latin paraphrase in Part 3 of De Bry's Petits Voyages.

This was the first Voyage of the Dutch to India, and is known under the name of
Cornelis Houtman, who sailed in the chief of the four vessels. The Dutch editor was
Bernardt Langhenez, whose name is attached to the dedication addressed to the
authorities of Middelborgh.

The English translation is so rare that I can find no description of any other copy
than this and the two in the British Museum.
