James, a Bristol man of Welsh origin, started in May 1631, and returned in September 1632, having met Luke Foxe somewhere in Button's Bay. His record is full of hardships and perils, and is said to have supplied Coleridge with some of the machinery of his Ancient Mariner. As a good Welshman, James named the region south of Hudson's Bay New South Wales, while Foxe who was from Hull called it New Yorkshire (—see ante North West Fox). James's Voyage has been reprinted with Foxe's by the Hakluyt Society. Sm. 4to., some of the plain margins slightly wormed; limp vellum 1557 14 0 0 EXTREMELY RARE. It seems to be THE FIRST PRINTED COLLECTION OF JESUIT RELATIONS. One might imagine that the same letters had been printed first at Coimbra in Portuguese, but the preface does not allow of such an hypothesis. The dedication is to the Duque de Cesa by Juan de Cordova, Abbat of Rute and Dean of Cordova, who says he had recently made the acquaintance of some Jesuits, brought to Cordova to found an institution there, and that though he had been prepossessed against them, they overcame his dislike. He now, therefore, wished to make the world acquainted with their goodness by printing some of the letters which had arrived from the East. The first Carta is from Master Francis (Xavier), recounting, in 23 pp. his work in Japan from 1549, and is dated from Couchin, whither he had returned 29 January 1552. Carta 2 is from Francisco Perez from Malaca 1550. Carta 3 from Juan de Abera at Maluco, 5 Febr., 1549. 4 Padre Gaspar from Ormuz 10 December 1549, 34 pp. 5 Gaspar Francisco from Ormuz 25. Nov. 1550. 6 Enrique Enriquez from Cochin 19 Jan. 1551, 14 pp Cartas 7-14 are eight letters from Corsica and Genoa 1553. Carta 15 is from Goa 23 December 1554: it relates the death of Master Francis (Xavier) and the sending of Fernan Mendez [Pinto] as Portuguesè minister to Japan. Carta 16 is from Pinto himself relating how he had joined the Jesuits and was going to work for them in Japan. Dated Malaca 5 April 1554. 700 ALVAREZ, ETHIOPIA, AND SECOND COLLECTION. Title (under a large q Small folio, in the original limp vellum cover, with a stamp on the title 1561 Leaves 72-86 contain what is THE SECOND COLLECTIVE EDITION OF JESUIT RELATIONS. There are eight letters in it; the first from Melchior Nuñez, 1554, informs Ignatius Loyola of the death of Francis Xavier; the second from Goa, 1554, treats of Japan; in the third Melchior, Nuñez writ esfrom Malacca, 1554; the fifth is from Pinto from Malaca 5 December 1554 [he is simply miscalled Hernadez]; the sixth Information from Malacca about China, from one who had been for six years prisoner there; the seventh is from Hermano Joseph in Brazil; and the eighth also from Brazil written by Juan de Azpilcueta in Puerto Seguro in 1555. None of these is a duplicate of any in No. 699. 701 COPIA DE LAS | Cartas que los Padres y hermanos de la Com- | pañia de 1564-65 Four preliminary leaves, followed by pp. 1-478 of text.
